So, why study the Earth's Surface Temperature?

Surface temperature is an observation that is not normally recorded by official weather agencies, and the number of surface temperature observations taken around the world is relatively small. Weather facilities typically report air temperature. So, that is why...

"GLOBE STUDENT OBSERVATIONS" CAN SIGNIFICANTLY ADD TO OUR KNOWLEDGE OF EARTH'S SURFACE TEMPERATURE !!!

Observing surface temperature allows us to understand how the atmosphere and land surface interact through the energy and water cycles. This work is critical for understanding how humans are affecting Earth's surface temperature. We specifically want to know how different land cover types such as concrete, asphalt, grass, and bare soil affect the temperature of Earth's surface. Your surface temperature observations will help us validate surface temperature measurements recorded from satellites. Your observations will also help us study the phenomenon known as the "urban heat island effect". When new buildings, roads and parking lots are built, our landscape is altered, and these changes can potentially warm up the planet. How has the area around your school or home changed in recent years?

Our Surface Temperature Research is Possible because of
"Your Interest and Participation" -
This can be YOUR RESEARCH PROJECT also!
Thank You So Much !!!

Have Fun Exploring your World and using your Infrared Thermometer (IRT) when collecting Surface Temperature readings!

If you ever have a question, or an idea that you would like to share, or would just like to speak with us, PLEASE contact us!
We'd love to hear from you !!!

Meet the Scientists

Dr. Kevin Czajkowski
"I didn't really have a favorite class. I enjoyed snow days. I watched the weather during the winter hoping for a day off from school which lead me to take meteorology in college."

Meet the Scientists

Dr. Mark A. Templin
"I like animals and have1 rabbit, 2 dogs, 4 cats, 4 guinea pigs and a horse named "Snippy"

Meet the Scientists

Dr. Alison L. Spongberg
"I was inspired to go into science by my grandfather who was a Physics and a Greek professor at Princeton."

Meet the Scientists

Terri Benko
"All my life, I had a very strong interest in learning about animals. But back then, no one communicated to me that science classes would help me learn about and study animals !!!"

Meet the Scientists

Tim Ault
"My parents have always nurtured my curiousity about the world. And my favorite book is The Lord of the Rings".

Meet the Scientists

Takelia Bragg
"I have a cat, but I'm not going to tell you his name. I will tell you that it starts with the letter S, has two syllables, and ends with the letter D. My cat was also name after a famous sailor."

Meet the Scientists

Jackie Kane
"I love Pistachio Ice Cream, the movie Space Camp and Modern Christian Music."

Meet the Scientists

Jason Witter
"I am currently a Geology Graduate Student at University of Toledo in Earth, Ecological, And Environmental Sciences. I love the outdoors and woodworking."

Meet the Scientists

Janet Struble
"I am happy to have time for my hobbies including Counted Cross-stitch, embroidery and crocheting."
