Please join GLOBE, Canada and a blue ribbon panel of specialists on April 26 from 16:30 to 18:00 UT for a special Earth Week Cloud Web Chat. Learn how anyone can predict weather by understanding what different clouds mean. Clouds have an impact well beyond the atmosphere; they can be vehicles of dust particles, transporters of moisture and blankets for mountains.

When you look up and see clouds, what do you really see? Clouds are visual reminders of what the atmosphere is doing. They can tell us what type of weather pattern is passing over us and demonstrate wind shears and instability in the atmosphere. Through clouds, we can get an understanding of how energy is being transported and even dust and pollutants too.

Clouds are fun to watch, because they grow and change and each cloud has a life. The clouds over our heads today may have been hundreds of kilometers away yesterday and probably will be somewhere else tomorrow, in a different shape. They can foretell the weather and can tell us much, much more because every cloud has its own story!

The panel of specialists all work in the field, many from very different perspectives. As you meet these experts, think about the wide range of careers and opportunities that are available and how each of these people has been able to fashion their life’s work around their personal interest and passion for the weather! Now, let’s meet the experts:

Dr. Paul Ruscher, GLOBE’s Principal Investigator for clouds and relative humidity measurements, is a professor at the Department of Meteorology at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Dr. Ruscher worked with GLOBE teachers and students to develop a new atmosphere measurement protocol for relative humidity, an important observation. Relative humidity is one of the measurements that meteorologists make to determine the amount of water vapor present in the atmosphere. In GLOBE, you can measure cloud precipitation and soil moisture together with relative humidity to help track the flow of water in our environment.

Peter Hardy, Canadian Arctic Territories GLOBE Coordinator, is taking the GLOBE Program to the Canadian Arctic, surely one of the biggest teaching areas in the world. With a small population of a little over 95,000 people, the Canadian Arctic is made up of the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Peter has to cover a little over 4,000,000 square kilometers, visiting 80 communities and their schools. Peter will be on line with students and elders from the Eastern Arctic community of Pangnirtung on Baffin Island. Peter hopes to help elders and students from "Pang" share their traditional knowledge on Arctic Climate and clouds with students around the world.

Wayne M. Faas, Chief of the Climate Data Division of NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC.

Dr Geoff Strong, Meteorological Research Consultant, is an atmospheric research scientist specializing in thunderstorms, atmospheric moisture budgets (using instrumented weather balloons), evapotranspiration, and thunderstorm forecasting.

Andrew Giles, Forecaster and Meteorologist, Arctic Weather Center Edmonton, Environment Canada, is one of the lead forecasters, providing supervision for the forecast and meteorology team on weather across the whole of the Canadian Arctic. He is keenly interested in meteorological data generated by students and has used GLOBE student data as a back up in his forecasting.

Chris Spence is a hydrologist with Environment Canada in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. He conducts hydrology studies in the Northwest Territories, looking specifically at the water cycle in the Canadian Shield, how tree rings can be used to estimate past climate, and if river levels in Canada's north are being influenced by climate change.

Arjen (Ed) and Jerrine Verkaik are a photography/writing team whose lives have been bound together by a shared passion for the sky. Together, they have traveled many miles, photographing, writing and speaking about the exquisitely beautiful and mysterious skies that inspire their work. They have chased clouds. They have chased rainbows. They have chased snowsqualls and fog. And, of course, they have chased one of nature's greatest furies: the tornado. Their collection of sky photography is the largest and most diverse in the world.

Peter Huffam is a Team Supervisor at the Yellowknife Flight Service Station, Canada Air Traffic Services (ATS) facility located in Yellowknife, Capital City of Canada's Northwest Territories. The primary function of a Flight Service Station is to provide Aviation Safety support through Weather Observing and Reporting, Aviation Weather Briefings, Flight Planning and Alerting services, as well as Air Traffic Control support.

Terri Lang is a senior meteorologist at the Mountain Weather Center (Meteorological Service of Canada) in Kelowna, BC. The Mountain Weather Center produces a range of forecast products for BC and the Yukon including public, aviation and highway weather forecasts. Terri has been a meteorologist for over ten years with experience in weather
centers in Winnipeg and Saskatoon before coming to Kelowna. She has extensive experience in public weather forecasting, aviation weather forecasting and severe weather forecasting. She will talk about the impact of mountains on clouds and weather.

This web chat is linked to a special project celebrating Earth Week in 2001. GLOBE Schools all over the world are welcome to try out the simple cloud activities and learn more about this fabulous part of GLOBE. Visit http://www.globe.gov/arc/s2s/archive/cloudwatch/index.pl?archive&.

RE: [bartholomue/shawniganlake/CA] if you fell through a rain cloud would you get wet?
I think it is safe to say that you would get soaked! It would be similar to riding a bike in fog or driving a car through fog - water would accumulate on any object that passes through it.

[ Sung/ShawmiganLakeschool/CA - 54 - 16:37:19 ]
Hello, i am sung and I want to talk about lots of stuff, i hop you can teach me lots of things...

HI

[ MattWakefield/CentralMiddleSchool/US - 65 - 16:38:03 ]
What determines what kind of cloud it is?

[ JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US - 66 - 16:38:09 ]
it depends on what kind of cloud

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 67 - 16:38:17 ]
RE: [3RDGRADEMRSADAMS/HOLYREDEEMERCATHOLICSCHOOL/US] Do you like watching and seeing clouds and why?
We can learn so much by watching the clouds form...we see how the atmosphere is changing by watching the clouds - we see where the air becomes humid enough, and they also tell us where air is rising, very important for early signs as to when or where it might rain or snow.

[ Wayne/TomUSANOAA/NCDC - 68 - 16:38:19 ]
Hi everone from the sunny city Asheville in the mountains of the state of North Carolina in USA.

RE: [adriana/shawniganlakeschool/CA] Mr. Ruscher i have a question for you how much water do you think a cloud hold before it starts raining??
A cloud can form as water vapor condenses, and the maximum amount is determined mostly by the temperature of the cloud; for "warmer" clouds, we get more vapor to condense. Precipitation will only occur after a time when drops grow large enough, or we can get ice crystals to form; when ice crystals form it sometimes starts what we might call a chain reaction, and even summer thunderstorms have raging blizzards in them several kilometers above the surface!

RE: [bartholomue/shawniganlake/CA] if you fell through a rain cloud would you get wet?
Depends on where you were in the cloud. All rain starts out as ice where the temperature is below 0 and as it falls into warmer air, turns into rain.

RE: [Mia/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] We see all types of clouds. are there places on earth where certain cloud types are rare
That is a good question...when you get down to real specialized clouds, like altocumulus lenticularis (lens-shaped altocumulus clouds, they almost look like flying saucers), then you could say they might be rare, for example here in Florida, where we have no mountains (these require mountains). But really, I can imagine that even cumulonimbus (thunderstorms OR snow showers, etc.) can form just about anywhere on earth.

[ ALEX/SHAWNIGANLAKESCHOOL/CA - 149 - 16:42:47 ]
Mr gills i have a question for you it is possible to create man made clouds withour natural resources

[ GeoffStrong/CloudThunderstormexpert - 150 - 16:42:49 ]
RE: [TARIATALBERT/CENTRALMIDDLESCHOOL/US] IS THERE REALLY ANY REASON WHY CLOUDS ARE THERE.(IN THE SKY)
To answer TARIATALBERT's question above, YES, there certainly are reasons why clouds are there. It is part of nature's way to redistribute water on the earth. Otherwise, you would have the oceans, and you would have dry land (no water), because all water eventually seeks the lowest level (sea level) on earth, and discharges either abiove or below ground towards the ocean.

[ KATHRYNHUSARJENNYMOORE//Unknown - 151 - 16:42:49 ]

hi everyone. i'm megan i was wondering for instance, if there was a cloud in B.C and it moved across B.C to Alverta, would one of the clouds that we saw in B.C be seen across the world? or would it just evaporate or change into another cloud

Julie... as far as I know, there is the same amount of oxygen in each cloud. Clouds are made up of water vapour or very small water droplets. And water is made up of H2O, 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen molecule. But the bigger the cloud, the more water droplets it contains and thus the more oxygen on the whole!

RE: [JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US] why are cumulus clouds dark
The bases of cumulus clouds are dark because the sunshine coming from above is blocked by all the tiny droplets in the cloud. When clouds are young (fairly new) they are composed of many, many tiny droplets. As they become older there are fewer droplets to block the light so older clouds are not as dark. So young, growing cumulus clouds have dark bases even though the clouds are small.

No clouds are very light, you might think that they float but they really don't; since air is rising, clouds appear to be held up; but water vapor is constantly condensing and cloud drops (water in liquid form) is constantly evaporating.

RE: [BiBi/Shawnigan/CA] CAN U MAKE MAN MADE CLOUDS?
There has been some success in making clouds. This is done by putting hygroscopic particles (water attracking) in the air. The water vapor then condenses on the particles eventually making clouds and in some cases precipitation. There are many legal questions about making clouds/rain...if you make it rain over site A, have you in some way made it NOT rain over site B. End result...a law suit.

RE: [KATHRYNHUSARJENNYMOORE//Unknown] HI, MY NAME IS KATHRYN AND I HAVE A QUESTION FOR DR.RUSCHER. DO ALTOCUMULUS, ALTOSTRATUS CLOUDS BRING ANY SPECIAL KIND OF WEATHER?
Altocumulus clouds often tell us that the atmosphere is becoming more unstable at altitudes of 2-6 kilometers, which is very important. This might be an indicator that, if it is a warm day, showers or thunderstorms may come later. Altostratus clouds often precede nimbostratus, which may form from them, if conditions are right. They may indicate a forecast of steady rain or snow coming soon.

RE: [Bart/shawniganlakeschool/CA] Mr. Ruscher: Besides that clouds provide rain, are clouds good for the Earth in other ways??
Clouds help to moderate the climate by shielding the earth from too much solar radiation during the daytime, and they prevent the earth from cooling too much at night. Here in Tallahassee today, we are just getting some clouds to form, otherwise it has been a beautiful sunny day, but cooler than the previous few days because we had a cold front pass yesterday.

RE: [3RDGRADEMRSADAMS/HOLYREDEEMERCATHOLICSCHOOL/US] Joseph asks: How much and what do YOU know about clouds? Sara asks: why do people see shapes and animals in the clouds?
Joseph, we know an awful lot about clouds, wht they form, how they form, how much water may be in them. We are still struggling a little with trying to predict them correctly (such as why we get a severe thunderstorm rather than just a simple rainshower), but forecasters are doing a good job at that too (abolut 80% correct), and getting better through research. Sara, I really like your question about 'shapes and animals in the clouds'. I see them often too, and it's fun picking out shapes like that. I guess its just letting your imagination go, and nature does the rest. The shapes, however, are purely random - or maybe nature likes to place tricks on us?

RE: [ALEX/SHAWNIGANLAKESCHOOL/CA] Mr giles how solid can a cloud be.
Living on Vancouver Island, you see lots of fog - fog is a cloud that is on the ground - and you can walk through it. So a cloud is not solid, but is composed of millions of water droplets.

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 276 - 16:50:28 ]
RE: [Cirrus/ShawniganLake/CA] What causes an anvil to develop at the top of a thunferhead?
When the updraft in a thunderstorm (cumulonimbus) reaches the top of the troposphere, at altitudes of about 10-15 kilometers above the surface, air reaches what we call the tropopause, which is very difficult to "punch through" - the stratosphere is very stable and air can't rise into it very easily. So the air rising in a thunderstorm spreads out into an anvil.

RE: [Sara/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] Mr.Huffam When birds are flying can heavy clouds affect the air pressure on them and make it harder or harm them,or make it easier?
Sara... there is a piece of weather folklore that say birds fly low before a storm. It is assumed that the insects they eat are flying lower because of the increased humidity before a storm. The falling air pressure should not affect them too much. However, my brother the ornithologist tells me that some birds migrate along cold fronts to take advantage of the strong winds.

[ Wayne/TomUSANOAA/NCDC - 294 - 16:51:59 ]
RE: [KyleCorson/Centralmiddleschool/US] wayne tom how far in advance can you predict weather
We are more accurate with shorter range forecasts and less accurate with longer ones. With computer models and improved observations (satellite, radar), we are making progress in longer range forecasts (out to 10 days). Some Global Circulation Models are giving some favorable results with seasonal forecasts. We have surface observations every couple of hundred miles, and balloon launches for upper atmopshere measurements(every 500 miles or so) so there is alot of space in between those measurements for the nature/atmospheric changes. Satellite and radar are the biggest advances we have seen over the last 25 years.

RE: [jazmin/shawniganlakeschool/CA] I have a question... can clouds be used to predict the weather?
Clouds are great weather predictors. They show us which way the wind is blowing at different heights in the atmosphere. Because the wind is usually stronger high up, high clouds blow out far ahead of an approaching weather system, so they are the early warning signs for a change in the weather. On a summer day altocumulus clouds will bubble and gradually become larger, indicating that a storm may develop later in the day. If you spend enough time watching clouds, learning how they behave and move, you can become your own weather forcaster.

RE: [Cirrus/ShawniganLake/CA] Is there a difference between low clouds and fog?
The ONLY difference between low clouds (stratus) and fog, is that fog is startus based on the ground. Just to expand this a little, I have been 'inside' a thunderstorm cloud on a mountain, and the cloud topped the mountain and looked just like fog. I was inside a vehicle, so there was little danger, but I would not reccomend you doing this otherwise. The lightning was like being inside a camera flash going off.

RE: [Sean/SHAWNIGANLAKESCHOOL/CA] why don't huge clouds dump their water after the vapor liquifies again? (For Mr.Giles)
In some ways they do - look at big thunderstorm clouds. When the amount of moisture in them gets above a certain level, it starts to rain, and depending on the actual amount, it either rains softly or very hard.

RE: [TommyElder/CentralMiddleSchool/US] WHY DO CLOUDS TURN DIFFERENT COLORS?
Tommy... clouds turn different colours depending on the angle of the sun and the thickness of the cloud. Black clouds are usually very thick clouds and not much sunshine can get through. The red and orange you see at sunset are the colours from the sun's light being reflected through the thick atmosphere and bouncing off the clouds.

RE: [YOKOZUNA/SHAWNIGANLAKESCHOOL/CA] how large can a cloud get in area?
Clouds may extend over thousands of kilometers in area along a cold front, in particular. It then becomes difficult to pick out individual clouds so we say that the entire area is covered with clouds (if you are under them it might be OVERCAST, for example) and then we try to identify the cloud types we see.

RE: [MichaelJaclynAshley/FersonCreek/US] Hello, my name is Jaclyn. I have a question for Chris Spense. When you look at the tree rings how can you tell what was the past climate?
Michael, the wetter and warmer the weather, the better trees grow and the wider the rings are. Evergreen trees go dormant each winter here and stop growing, so there is one ring for each year. By relating the width of a tree ring we can figure out if the climate was warmer and wetter that year. We use statistics to find a relationship for the weather record we have (which is ~40 years here) and extend it back for the life of the tree. We have extended annual weather records back to the 1600's.

RE: [haruki/shawnigan/CA] whats the difference between different kinds of clouds?
Clouds are classified by their altitude (low, middle and high) and their shape (either flat or layered, or puffy or with some shape like waves, rolly-polly, etc.). Also if clouds produce precipitation (rain or snow) they are given a special name using a form of the word nimbus. alto=middle cirro=high strato=layered cumulo=heaped or lumpy

RE: [haruki/shawnigan/CA] whats the difference between different kinds of clouds?
Haruki... the type of cloud you see depends on the height of the cloud above the ground and what the cloud is made of, either water particles or ice particles. The higher clouds are made up of ice because of the cold temperatures higher in the atmosphere. The lower clouds usually are made up of water particles.

RE: [CarlosFrench/BostonSouthEndPublicLibrary/US] Question for Andrew on entering our GLOBE data in the new Atmosphere protocol: Why don’t we enter stratus when it’s foggy out? Also at what visibility do we use obscured when entering our data?
I'd like to answer this one, too - if it is foggy you may enter that the sky is OBSCURED, enter fog as the obscuring phenomenon, and they please do enter stratus as the cloud in the comments, or metadata. Scientists understand that when you are completely covered with fog, you really do have a stratus cloud on the ground. But what we are interested in is the difference between a stratus cloud above the ground, and fog on the ground, that is why we made some changes in the cloud protocols.

RE: [SAMCALEB/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] can you ever stand on a cloud??
Only in your imagination! Clouds are really just foggy air, so every object will fall through them. You can't stand on a cloud, but in some very intense thunderstorms, you might be able to be suspended inside the cloud. That's because the air inside the storm is moving up so rapidly that it can hold objects (like large hailstones) against gravity for short periods of time

[ Andrew/EnvironmentCanada - 404 - 16:58:09 ]
RE: [Mia/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] Is there a direction that clouds move?
Because clouds are made up of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, they will move with the winds at the level they are found at. So if the winds at cloud level are blowing from west to east, so will the clouds.

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 405 - 16:58:13 ]
RE: [Bob/ShawniganLakeShcool/CA] Why are clouds white?
Clouds are white because cloud droplets and ice crystals reflect all the sunlight on them equally. When you spin a color wheel fast, you see white, correct? That is the same idea.

RE: [BiBi/Shawnigan/CA] If you fall through a cloud, will u get wet?
Bibi, if you fell through a cloud, yes, you would 'likely' get wet. It depends on how far (how long) you were falling. Fog is another form of cloud (ground-based), and our easterners who get lots of fog on the northeast coast (Boston to Nova Scotia, for example), can tell us that you do indeed get wet in fog. Having grown up in foggy Newfoundland, I can assure you of this.

RE: [Stratus/ShawniganLake/CA] Why do we sometimes see a halo around the sun or moon? Is this caused by clouds and what does it mean?
A halo is usually formed by sunlight being refracted by ice crystals, and is a sign of high level moisture - which can then be a sign of worsening weather.

RE: [Bonnie/GLOBE/US] The GLOBE students from Italy would also like to know: Why does altitude influence the shape and type of clouds?
Altitude is an influence because the high altitude clouds are made of ice crystals, because air is so cold up high. This tends to make the clouds more delicate in appearance, especially for cirrus.

The earth moves a little further away so the sun is weaker, also the earth spins on a tilted axis and in summer the northern hemisp[here is pointed toward the sun so it is hotter, in winter it is pointed away and it is cooler. In the arctic the sunlight doesnt even shine so the earth gets colder and the oceans and rivers freeze

RE: [KATHRYNHUSARJENNYMOORE//Unknown] HI, MY NAME IS Jenny from Ferson Creek Elementry School and I have a question for Dr. Ruscher. Do you have any ways of telling changes of the weather?
Hi, I like to watch the sky change to determine whether we are going to get thunderstorms during summer days in Florida. You can watch the sky go from completely clear to overcast in a few hours, and you can see small cumulus clouds grow into cumulonimbus. We get a "sea breeze" here in Florida; in Tallahassee we are about 30 kilometers inland from the coast, and we can watch the clouds grow to the south of us, and approach on some days (if the winds are right), then we can get a good prediction about rain that day.

[ AttagoyukSchoolStudents/AttagoyukIlisavik/CA - 457 - 17:01:40 ]
It has been very warm here in Pangnirtung. We have noticed it is getting warmer. Elders tell us that the sky is not as blue as it was 20 yrs ago. This is from pollution in our atmosphere. Today is -5 with clear blue sky and slight haze. No wind

[ TerriLang/MountainWeatherCentre - 458 - 17:01:42 ]
RE: [BiBi/Shawnigan/CA] If you fall through a cloud, will u get wet?
Bibi... it depends on what kind of cloud it is. If you fell through a thin cloud made of ice, you would not get wet. If you stood in a fog bank (stratus), you probably wouldn't get wet but it would be damp. If you fell through a cumulonimbus cloud, you would like get wet, maybe even hailed on and thrown about by very strong winds!!

Hi Bibi as clouds sweep across the sky the water droplets in them can absorb gases. A chemical reaction between water and some gases leads to the water becoming acid and when it rains you have acid rain.

There was a question about rivers and climate change. Hydrologists are still trying to find out what the effects of climate change on rivers will be. Because many rivers are different, the Rio Grande is a much different river than the Canadian Shield or muskeg rivers we have in Canada's north, each reacts to rain and snow differently. The effect on rivers will depend on if it it to get wetter and/or warmer where you are and how that may affect evaporation or uptake of moisture into the ground, which will prevent water from reaching the rivers.

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 488 - 17:03:47 ]
RE: [Patrick/ShawniganLakeschool/CA] Dr.Ruscher. What is the highest altitude a cloud has ever been at?
Hi, the highest altitude clouds are noctilucent and mother-of-pearl clouds, and nacreous clouds, which appear outside the troposphere, but these are very unusual (and not in the GLOBE protocols!). However, cumulonimbus cloud anvils (tops of thunderstorms) sometimes reach over 18 kilometers for very strong storms.

RE: [Wayne/TomUSANOAA/NCDC] A snowquall is just a heavy snowshower....like a summertime thunderstorm...rain/snow amounts can vary.
In the fall during cold spells the cold air travelling over the warm water of the Great Lakes creates large towering cumulus clouds. As these move inland they cool down to produce very heavy bursts of snow that can fall up to five centimters an hour for many hours in one area. What's unusual is that some towns are hit with heavy snowsqualls while only onle a few miles away it can be sunny all day.

RE: [jazmin/shawniganlakeschool/CA] can you use clouds to predict the weather?
Jazmin - you ask a question dear to my heart (and to that of the Verkaiks, also on here as experts). You most certainly CAN predict weather from clouds, at least in the short term. For example, someone above mention 'altocumulus Castellanus' clouds. If you see these (small 'turrets' poking up through a broken altocumulus cloud layer) during the morning, especially on the Canadian prairies orv the U.S. High Plains, then there is a good chance of a thunderstorm that day. This is because they are an indicator of existing unstable air at those levels. That is but one example; we can think on many others where clouds help you predict the weather. UNFORTUNATELY, the new automatic weather stations, which have replaced hman observers at most weather sites, DO NOT give you any description of clouds - one area where technology has not improved on humans.

RE: [cosmo_girl/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] does it have anything to do with rain ms.Lang?
Cosmo girl... purple and pink clouds generally don't have anything to do with rain. There is a piece of weather folklore that states "red in the morning, sailors take warning, red at night, sailors delight" (the bible also has a similar saying for shepards). This has to do with where the sun is with respect to the direction of the clouds. IN the northern hemisphere, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The clouds in the northern hemisphere GENERALLY move from west to east. Thus if you see a red sky in the morning (meaning the sun is reflecting off clouds in the west) it may mean the clouds are moving towards you. The reverse is true in the evening.

RE: [Bob/ShawniganLakeShcool/CA] Mr. Ruscher can clouds affect humdity or the berometric pressure?
Hi, Bob - clouds are generally created by humidity differences, rather than the other way. Clouds during daytime often will decrease the temperature, which can increase (slightly) the relative humidity. Also there may be very small pressure changes, not observable with a typical aneroid barometer.

A rainbow happens when sun shines on falling rain and you are in the right place to see it (in the afternoon this would be to the west of the shower). So, if you wanted to chase the rainbow what you are really doing is chasing that shower cloud that is moving away (usually to the east)so that you are always in the right place to see the rainbow. It's a tricky business because other clouds can fill in the clear sky or the shower may stop raining, but it's a lot of fun to try.

Storms in the spring and fall move from 30-50 miles per hour, but storms in the middle of summer often move more slowly, around 10-20 miles per hour. Once in awhile during a warm, humid, stagnant weather pattern, some thunderclouds will form and then die without moving any distance at all. A typical average for the motion of a storm cloud would be 25 miles per hour.

RE: [Boser/ShawnigawnLake/CA] Ms.Lang. I was wandering, to phisical land features affect clouds
Boser... yes! Physical features such as mountains and lakes are very important when it comes to the formation of clouds. As air gets forced up mountains, the water vapour in the air condenses and clouds form and often rain which is why Vancouver is so rainy! When the air is forced DOWN the mountain, it warms and dries and usually evaporates which is why Calgary gets chinooks. When water is around (like oceans and lakes), the moisture from the water evaporates into the air and helps to form clouds. The temperature of the water is also very important.

[ GeoffStrong/CloudThunderstormexpert - 612 - 17:13:36 ]
RE: [Matthew/NJMacpherson/CA] Dr geoff Strong how do the clouds around hurricans form?
Matthew, clouds form around hurricanes very much like around low pressure systems. In either case, the clouds form because the (relatively) lower pressure causes the air to 'converge' there (winds generally move from higher towards lower pressure). When the 'moist' air converges around a 'low' or a 'hurricane', it has to go upward. The upward motion causes the moist air to cool, then condense, first forming cloud, then precipitation particles as they get bigger. Hurricanes are smaller and more concentrated than 'ordinary' low pressure systems, so are more intense. The air converges more rapidly, the upward motuion is more rapid, and by forming over relatively warm oceans, the air is also 'unstable'. Hence you get inbtense thunderstorms embedded in hurricane clouds. When the hurricanes strike land, the additional turbulence with the land often sets off tornadoes as well. In the limited time we have here, I hope this answer helps. Check your web sites for more detailed information on hurricanes.

RE: [Patrick/ShawniganLakeschool/CA] Mr.ruscher. are there clouds on venus and what type?
Clouds on Venus are made of carbon dioxide, primarily. A very heavy atmosphere there! Now that I've answered about Mars and Jupiter too I'll have to not answer any other questions about planetary clouds, because that is about all I know about the other planets' atmospheres, I'm afraid! Most of the outer planets and some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn at least are known to have atmospheres of various light gases.

RE: [carternjmacpherson] hi my name is carter stirling i live in yellowknife nwt canada I got to nj macpherson. I have a question for mr chris spence. do acid rain clouds have a certain ph level or a certain ph level range
Carter, I'm not sure; perhaps one of the other experts could help out. Rain is formed by water vapour binding to a dust particle. Acid rain is created when that dust particle is something like sulpher or something else that may turn acidic when in contact with water. Remember that acid rain and their clouds are only slightly acidic, maybe with a pH of 6, but in some areas that subtle change in acidity of the rain makes a big difference for the plants.

Julie.. yes. Cloud particles are just very tiny water droplets. When there is enough water vapour absorbed by the cloud, the drops get bigger. And when the drops get big enough, it rains! Remember that ice is frozen water so when it snows, you are also getting more H2O just in the frozen form!

Hi, Pat and the students in Italy. Precipitation intensity can be measured with any rain gauge, it is the amount divided by the time. A recording rain gauge (like a tipping bucket rain gauge, or hyetograph) can be used to get intensity directly. Radar also measures precipitation intensity. An instrument called a ceilometer can measure cloud cover. I don't know if that is the same as is used in Italy.

RE: [KATHRYNHUSARJENNYMOORE//Unknown] This is Kathryn from Ferson Creek Elementary School and I have a question for Chris Spense. How do you use tree rings to tell of past climates?
Kathryn, Evergreen trees go dormant every winter up north and so have one tree ring for each year. The wetter and warmer the year is, the happier the tree is, the more the tree grows and the the tree ring for that year gets wider. We measure the widths of all the tree rings from many many trees and relate these to temperature and precipitation from our weather records. Because our weather records here in Canada's north are maybe 40 years old but the trees are a few hundred years old, we can estimate past weather back through the life of the trees, which can be into the 1600's.

RE: [carternjmacpherson] I have a question for terri lang and my name is carter stirling from yellowknife nwt Canada . Iam wondering since sometimes on mountains the snow is hard packed, would that effecct evaporation in the water cycle?
Carter.. good question. The snow in the mountains can be very hard packed plus it is high up there and is slow to melt. This snow is very important to the water cycle. In the valleys, the snow melts pretty quickly once spring arrives, but the snow in the mountains is much slower to melt. It will melt slowly during the summer, slowly adding water to the lakes and rivers which is needed by animals and humans! Sometimes, this snow never melts which is how glacier are formed which are also important to the water cycle as glaciers store a tremendous amount of water.

how can hail only form in the summer or during hot weather when they are ice?

[ GeoffStrong/CloudThunderstormexpert - 716 - 17:26:23 ]
RE: [Stratus/ShawniganLake/CA] How does hail form in clouds?
Hail forms in 'thunderstorm clouds', usually because of an ice crystal (or frozen rain droplet), which is carried upward in a strong updraft, collects smaller rain/cloud droplets as it goes up, and gets larger. Each large water droplet makes a full layer on the hailstone when it freezes. If you cut a large hailstone in half, you will see the layers of growth, telling you something about its short history, much lik tree rings. Some hailstones are thought to make several traverses up and down in the cloud, getting 'very large'. Eventually, the hailstone gets large enough that gravity overcomes the cloud updraft, and it must fall through. When enough of the hailstones (and large raindrops) start falling, they destroy the updraft, creating a downdraft, and this usually starts the thunderstorm decay process. In between, you sometimes get interactions between the updraft and downdraft (near the heaviest precipitation), and 'tornadoes' are often the result of this interaction.

[ Andrew/EnvironmentCanada - 717 - 17:26:24 ]
RE: [JohnZSamPSamR/FersonCreek/US] Mr. Giles Dear Mr. Giles,Hello I am John I would like to know have you ever seen all the clouds at once?Exept Cumulonimbus.
No - you usually see a certain group of clouds together as the pattern to form one group of clouds is different from another. For example to get stratus you need cool air and lots of moisture close to the ground whereas to get cumulonimbus, you need lots of heat and moisture. Cirrus is formed by high level moisture.

RE: [3RDGRADEMRSADAMS/HOLYREDEEMERCATHOLICSCHOOL/US] Ralphie asks:How do clouds change from one shape to another?
Clouds either change shape because they are getting larger or because they are shrinking, but low clouds are also shaped by the ground they move over. Clouds can be stretched out by the wind so they are long strands. Sometimes a sheet of clouds can break up into crumbly elements. This is caused by very slow evaporation. In general, the shapes of cloud is like a tug of war between the wind that is carrying them along and any up and down motion inside the cloud. Since the cloud parts are like patches of fog high up in the sky, their edges are always changing because they are surrounded by drier air.

RE: [KenanSarkic/CentralMiddle/US] Dr. Strong what are the instrumented weather balloons called that you use when specializing thunderstorm and atmospheric moisture?
KenanSarkic, you just hit upon my very favorite metgeorological instrument. That is the 'radiosonde', or sometimes called 'rawinsonde' (both essentially the same thing). These 'sondes' contain sensors for temperature, humidity, and pressure, and they also contain a small radio transmitter to send data back to your ground station where you released your balloon. The balloon and sonde are 'tracked' using either a radio theodolite, radar, optical theodolite, or more recently, satellite GPS systems. The tracking tells you where the sonde is at all times, and from this you can compute wind direction and speed. Today's sondes sned back these data every second or so. They go upward at a rate of about 5 meters per second, which means you collect data aspproximately every 5 meters.

That depends on the actual air temperature in the clouds and on the ground. If the temperatures is generally below 32F or 0C in the cloud layer where it is precipitating and on the ground it will usuallysnow, but sometine there are different layers of air with different temperatures to deal with.

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 781 - 17:35:45 ]
RE: [TARIATALBERT/CENTRALMIDDLESCHOOL/US] Mr. Paul Ruscher can a cloud dissolve?
Hi, Taria - great question! Clouds can dissolve in fact! If air sinks in a cloud, it will warm up and the humidity will decrease, so water drops will evaporate, making it look like the cloud dissolves. That is how most fog dissipates. We use the word dissipate rather than dissolve, but the idea is similar.

[ GeoffStrong/CloudThunderstormexpert - 782 - 17:36:09 ]
RE: [JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US] how can hail only form in the summer or during hot weather when they are ice?
JohnJacoby, good question! And the answer is, because on even a hot summer day, the freezing level is still between 3 and 5 kilometres (10,000 - 15,000 feet) above sea level. Precipitation particles in thunderstorms are carried to 6-10 kilometers into the cloud where it is freezing. The improtant part of your question, however, is that SMALL HAILSTONES (say, less than 1/2 inch diameter), will often melt before it hits the ground. So, you know that a large hailstone on the ground was larger within the cloud, and partly melts on the way down below cloud base.

[ TerriLang/MountainWeatherCentre - 785 - 17:36:25 ]
RE: [ElvisAlicic/CentralMiddleSchool/US] Terri Lang how much pricipitation can one cloud produce when it is condesed.
Elvis... clouds can produce an tremendous amount of precipitation when it is condensed. Some clouds produce very little (which is why not all clouds have rain or snow coming from them). Cumulonimbus clouds are the best precipitation producers. During one storm that hit Saskatchewan a number of years ago, over 250 mm of rain fell in just over an hour! That is a lot rain!

[ ArjenEdandJerrineGLOBEexp - 786 - 17:36:28 ]
RE: [JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US] How come hail can form when its hot outside
Storm clouds are very tall, reaching up many miles into the sky. Although it's warm down here, the temperature gets colder and colder as you go higher and higher. Once you rise above about 12,000 feet the temperature bdrops below zero, so air that is rising above this level will carry droplets up that freeze and gradually grow larger as they bump into other raindrops, forming a hail stone. As the stone falls, it is cold enough to onle partly melt before it hits the ground. So while you are sweltering on a summer day, the tops of those brilliant thunderheads are in a very cold windy part of the atmosphere.

RE: [TommyElder/CentralMiddleSchool/US] HOW LONG DO CLOUDS LAST?????????????????????????????????????????????
I like this question! Clouds generally last as long as there is 'upward motion' within the cloud. The upward motion causes the moist air to 'cool', then condense (cools because it is going to lower pressures). Once the cloud gets downward motion (we call subsidence), then the opposite process is occurring and the cloud dissippates. The result is that when you see clouds and/or clear air, you know where there is upward and/or downward motion AT, and just BELOW the cloud. Sailplane pilots and parachutists use this information to stay up in the air longer.

[ Paul_Ruscher/FSU - 813 - 17:40:15 ]
RE: [Jimmy/Qaqqalik/CA] How does cumulonimbus form?
Hi, Jimmy - cumulonimbus clouds form when air rises very rapidly due to very strong surface heating, air flowing up over mountains or fronts, or other strong low pressure areas. If there is very cold air aloft (high above the surface), the air may rise all the way to the top of the troposphere; in the upper parts of the clouds, ice crystals form and they are very effective at making precipitation-size drops (or ice/snow) which fall out of the cloud in showers.

RE: [TommyElder/CentralMiddleSchool/US] HOW LONG DO CLOUDS LAST?????????????????????????????????????????????
Stratus clouds usually last for many many hours or days; cumulus type clouds usually have a shorter life cycle, a few hours or less. This is because stratus clouds form where there is a large area of slowly rising air that persists for long periods of time. Cumulus type clouds often occur where air is rising more rapidly over shorter periods of time, and smaller areas.

RE: [LeahAshleySarah/FersonCreek/Unknown] terri lang , do you ever see rainshadows?
Leah... by rainshadows, I assume you mean the dry areas just to the lee (or west in the Northern Hemisphere) of high mountains. Here in Kelowna, we live in a rain shadow. The coast mountains of BC stand over 14,000 feet in some places, so they squeeze out much of the rain and snow from the clouds before that same air moves over us. It is very dry in the summer here and there are some places in southern BC that are considered deserts!

Hailstones up to about 9 cm (I don';t recall the exact record size) have been recorded. In Alberta where I live, for example, we frequently (several times a summer) get reports of hailstones as large as a BASEBALL. The hailstone sized is a very good indicator of the thunderstorm intensity which produced it. A baseball-size hailstone is caused by a very intense thunderstorm.

RE: [MitchellZuck/CentralMiddleSchool/US] what is the longest a cloud can last?
Water clouds don't last very long - maybe up to an hour. The prioblem with thinking about a cloud as a discrete object is that it is constantly changing and renewing itself. If it didn't renew itself (forming new cloud material) then it would simply evaporate and disappear. So what you see is not exactly the same cloud you saw a short while ago. Ice crystal clouds (like cirrus) can last a lot longer - up to 12 hours - because ice evaporates much more slowly than water. Try watching the clouds move from one side of the sky to the other, looking for familiar shapes or details, to see if you can recognize the renewal going on.

Terri Long How early would you be able to predict a storm before it happenes

[ Chris_Spence/EnvironmentCanada - 837 - 17:44:16 ]
Joe and Brennan, Depends on where you start. Precipitation falls from the sky, and if its snow, stays on the ground until it melts. Some of the snowmelt and rain can infiltrate into the ground, and from there it slowly travels to streams. Some of the snow and rain evaporates back to the atmosphere. Some water even travels directly over the ground into rivers, but this is rare except in cities (where the cement prevents water from getting into the ground) and some soils that are too hard to allow the water in. Some of the river water will evaporate back before it reaches the oceans.

RE: [SimoneReggiani/IstitutoTecnicoIndustrialeFermiMantova/IT] How can some white clouds completely darken the solar beams?
Basically, if the cloud is VERY THICK, it reduces the amount of light (through refraction, reflection) coming through it, and the cloud may appear to be dark then. However, the actual cloud is the same 'white' that you see on shallow clouds. The colour is completely determined by the amount of light coming through, and the angle that you view it from.

RE: [JohnZSamPSamR/FersonCreek/US] Ms. Lang High Ms. Lang do lenticulert clouds wear down mountains? If yes how many years would it take to lose a foot?
John.. no, lenticular clouds do not wear down mountains, but mountains form lenticular clouds. As air ascends up the mountain, the water vapour in the air condenses and forms a cloud. Then as the air descends down the mountain, it dries out. So, if the atmosphere is "stable" (meaning rain is not likely), you can get a series of these pancake shaped clouds that stay stationary over a mountain. They are beautiful and interesting clouds that do not precipitate.

RE: [JasonMills/CentralMiddleSchool/US] Wayne what is the longest time cloud lasted
A large mass of clouds known as a low pressure system can last for days and even weeks. The largest of these organized systems are known as hurricanes/tropical storms. Hurricane/Typhoon John lasted 31 days as it traveled both the Northeast and Northwest Pacific basins during August and September 1994. (It formed in the Northeast Pacific, reached hurricane force there, moved across the dateline and was renamed Typhoon John, and then finally recurved back across the dateline and renamed Hurricane John again.)

RE: [ElvisAlicic/CentralMiddleSchool/US] Terri Long How early would you be able to predict a storm before it happenes
Elvis... sometimes, we can predict a BIG storm (like one that covers an entire state or province) days in advance. But predicting the smaller thunderstorms that hit a city are much harder to forecast. We can figure out that the weather conditions are likely to produce thunderstorms in a general area (like the western part of a state or province) but narrowing it down is harder. Once a storm forms, we can follow it along and give cities an hour or two warning about it.

RE: [JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US] So when a hailstone is softball size that means inthe clouds it was even bigger
To a point, that is true. However, very large hailstones (generally any larger than 4 or 5 cm) actually melt very little in fall. That's because the ratio of exposed surface area to the volume of hailstone is small, whereas, for a small (say 1/2-inch diameter hailstone - sorry for mixing up units here), the surface area to the hailstone volume is large, and therefore melts much more easily. You may need to check your geometry for surface area and volume of 'spheres' to understand this better (you see, mathematics comes into this everywhere - to be a scientist, you must first study mathematics; that's why it is called the 'queen of science').

RE: [JohnJacoby/CentralMiddleSchool/US] why does hail usually form with tornadoes
The connection between large hail and tornadoes is simply that it takes a very tall, intense storm to produce a tornado, and those kinds of storms and those storms, going high up into the cold atmosphere, can also produce lots of hail. The common feature which matters in tall storms is the intense updraft (air entering the storm) which is necessarty for both hail formation and tornado formation.

RE: [NoraAmeliaMattFromFersonCrek] Dr. Geoff Strong,do thunder and lighting do anything to help the Earth? What makes thuner and lightning?
Great question! Yes, lightning is very beneficial to the earth, as well as being dangerous. Lightning helps to restore nutrients in the soil, for example, and when they cause forest fires, the fire often burns an otherwise old, decaying forest, allowing new growth after the fire (not all fires are bad, you see). You notice I said lightning is beneficial, and nothing aout thunder. Thunder is just the noise caused by lightning as it heats the air very rapidly, causing expansion, and hence the noise. Thunder does no damage (except to your eardrums perhaps), and I can't think of much beneficial, other than strange people like myself (and the Verkaiks) find thunder very soothing. You probably already know why you hear the thunder 'after' the lightning. Lightning flashes reach your eys at the speed of light, while the thnuder has to travel at the 'much slower'/ speed of sound. By timing the thunder, you can actually determine approximately how far away the thunderstorm (lightning) is. Storm chasers sometimes use this informnation to 'home in' on a storm that hey are chasing.

RE: [cosmo_girl/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] does anybody know the meaning of the word "alto" stratus
cosmo girl ... alto means middle. Stratus is the type of cloud that is uniform in consistency. Thus altostratus is a layer of uniform grey cloud that occurs in the middle atmosphere. You can usually see the sun through it.

RE: [jaZmiNjaCqueliNe/shawnigan/CA] We have a ? for the pros..... do land features effect the shape of a cloud?
Hi, ja... Yes, land features can affect where clouds form because the atmosphere can be more heated during daytime over land, allowing air to rise, then it cools, increasing the relative humidity to the point that the air gets saturated; then the cloud forms over land but maybe not over water.

RE: [LeahAshleySarah/FersonCreek/Unknown] Chris Spence. Hello, I am Sarah. How can you look at water cycles?
Sarah, We use climate towers to measure precipitation and evaporation. We use wells and soil moisture sensors to look at water storage in the ground. To measure river flow we measure the size of the river and the velocity of the water. We put them all together to figure out how much water is moving in each component. Please let Joe and Brennan that being a hydrologist is fun. It rocks.

RE: [cosmo_girl/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] does anybody know the meaning of the word "alto" stratus
Alto means high in Latin. But altostratus is a middle cloud layer- a "high" looking example of a layer cloud ... stratus means layer.

Our Inuit elder, Inoosik says that you can know what the weather is going to be like from the colour of clouds and the movement of the wind. Clouds blow in the wind so you can see how hard the wind is blowing from the speed and shape of clouds.

[ GeoffStrong/CloudThunderstormexpert - 985 - 18:03:08 ]
RE: [Boser/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] Mr.Strong how are thunder storms created
That's a very shgort question with a very long answer, but a very excellent question nonetheless. In short, thunderstorms are created when the air is made unstable by a combination of heating from below (the sun heating the earth and in turn heating the air immediately above the earth), and cooling at higher levels. The cooling occurs when a weather system is approaching from the west, so during summer, we often associate thunderstorm outbreaks with the approach of such a system, and say that it 'triggers' the thunderstorm, since the surface heating usually occurs every day during summer anyway. The third essential ingredient that you need for a thunderstorm is 'moisture' near the ground. Whe it is humid, hot, and a weather system is approaching in July on the pariries, you can also be assured that a thunderstorm will occur somewhere in the area.

RE: [Letizia1C/IstitutotecnicoIndustrialeFermiMantova/IT] How is it possible that clouds remain suspended in presence of great air flow?
Letizial.. clouds can remain suspended over a mountain when the atmosphere is very stable (meaning rain is not likely). The air moves up the mountain condenses then moves down the mountain and drier out. The cloud appears not to be moving, but the air is constantly moving throught it. These are called lenticular clouds.

RE: [Paul_Ruscher/FSU] Hi! Clouds will grow according to how the wind blows and where the air is most humid!
Cloudwatching is one of those hobbies that seem to be universal. People in all parts of the world do it, and there are many observers who report what they see to weather service. The sky is a great part of nature. It is always changing and very entertaining.

Rachel, What a great question, and you say you are only 7 years old! The best way I can answre this is to watch mommy boil water in the kettle. You see the steam (like cloud droplets) boiling out and going 'up' in the air. Clouds do this too. When the clouds get 'heavy', the rain then falls down.

I asked our Inuit elder about the northern lights. Beautiful white green and red dancing lights in the arctic sky. Inoosik says that when you see the northern lights going north south it means north wind coming and good weather. If the northern lights are all wavy and covering the east west sky it means clouds are coming. They will cover the sky by the end of the next day.

RE: [cosmo_girl/ShawniganLakeSchool/CA] I STILL don't understand how the Northern Lights work?!
The northern lights are a result of special waves of radiation from the sun hitting the outer atmosphere of the earth where they bang into atoms causing them to let go of a flash of light. all these flashes join together and we see shimmering and dancing noerthern lights, mostly when the sun has a lot of sunspot activity. Ed and Jerrine can probably answer this better.

The questions below were submitted by LBA Yaounde, a school in Cameroon that was unable to participate in the chat. The answers were provided by the experts:

(1) What do the different clouds mean, and how can weather be predicted from them?

From Paul Ruscher: I would encourage you to go through the chat archive, as this type of question came up many times. In particular, I mentioned cirrostratus, altocumulus, altostratus, nimbostratus, and cumulonimbus and their ability to help meteorologists predict weather from them.

(2) Why is the study of clouds of primary importance in Aviation?

From Louis Churchville (professional pilot): Clouds are visible clues to the condition of the air in which they are forming. Is the air stable? Are the clouds building or dissipating? How much of the sky is covered by clouds? How thick are the clouds? Are the clouds precursors of worsening weather or sunny skies? Will the clouds turn into thunderstorms? Will they bring rain, snow, sleet? Is there ice forming in the clouds? How windy is it? How windy will it get? Will the wind be steady in speed and direction or gusty-- changing direction without warning? . Pilots need to know what the weather is in order to fly safely. Understanding the many types of cloud formations and what types of other weather phenomenon those formations are associated with is of primary importance. All of the questions above are related to safe flying, and cloud formations provide direct visual evidence to answer those questions at least in a general sense. Airports need to know the weather in order to manage the pace of landing and take off operations safely--primarily visibility values, wind direction and speed, and turbulence are important. In short, clouds are symptoms of the weather--indirect indicators of general (and sometimes specific) trends in weather phenomena that have a direct impact on aviation safety.

(3) Why do we carry out weather forecasting? How is it important to our children at school?

From Terri Lang: Simple weather forecasting is easy to do for school children. Getting them to watch the clouds and record what kind of clouds and how the clouds are changing is important. The types of clouds will tell you something about what the weather will do (nimbostratus = rain, etc). The direction the clouds come from is also important if you have an understanding of where different types of weather systems come from in your end of the world. Recording pressure will also shed light on weather systems. Falling pressure usually means the approach of a low pressure system which could bring rain and rising pressure usually means better weather is coming. Simple temperature forecasting is also neat to do, if one understands where the weather is coming from and how much cloud there will be. Wind directions can also tell you from which direction weather systems are coming from. I believe it is important to teach children the basics about weather because it is something that is around all the time and can have a great impact on our lives. Children can learn to appreciate the weather but can also learn to prepare for significant events.

(4) How can weather forecasting be used to predict the trend in rampant floods that often hit the world from mid February to April each year?

From Terri Lang: Weather forecasters can usually catch most of these significant events before they happen and help people prepare for them. Satellite pictures can detect the storm systems as they form and computer weather predictions help determine whether the event will be significant or not.

(5) In reporting cloud cover, one of the descriptions is NO CLOUD. When can one really decide that there is no cloud in the sky? Are there any visual aids that could be used as a guide in doing this activity? What correlation is there between NO CLOUD and CLEAR SKY ?

From Paul Ruscher: A perfectly clear sky with no clouds in it at all should always be reported as NO CLOUDS. If there is a single tiny little puff of cumulus cloud in it, then CLEAR should be reported, and the cloud type should be reported as CUMULUS. Of course if the cloud cover is anywhere from 0-10% you should report CLEAR. I guess even 1% is too high an estimate for that single tiny puffy cumulus cloud, which is why I started the range above at 0%!

(6) Can data from atmosphere study be used to predict the possible occurrence of Earthquarkes? If so, how?

From Paul Ruscher: There is no relationship that I am aware of that relates clouds to earthquakes.

From Terri Lang: To the best of my knowledge, the study of the atmosphere does not help to predict earthquakes as earthquakes are generated deep inside the earth and are powered by movements of the huge pieces of earth known as tectonic plates, some of which cover huge portions of the earth!
