Brain Tumor Registry Reporting Training Materials
These training materials cover data collection for benign, borderline and malignant brain tumors. Because malignant brain tumors constitute such a small percentage of overall cancer incidence, little training has been provided for these tumors in the past. Both the National Coordinating Council's Brain Tumor Work Group and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Registry Operations Committee's Brain Tumor subcommittee agreed that this would be an ideal opportunity to provide training about data collection on all brain tumors in an effort to improve the overall quality of such data.
These materials are designed for training all reporters, and thus cover all aspects of reporting brain tumor information, including requirements of the Commission on Cancer, the National Program for Cancer Registries, and the National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER).
An exhaustive review of the materials was conducted by a wide variety of very experienced registrars and clinicians including representatives from all standard-setting organizations, help to produce this product that has met the standards of all agencies that will be using the materials.
All of the standard-setting organizations agreed that one set of training materials would be developed and used for training by all agencies to promote consistency in training. This is why speaker's notes are provided for the PowerPoint presentation. It is hoped that this will reduce the amount of misinformation that might be disseminated because of misinterpretation by individual instructors. This is also the premise for the training course offered in Atlanta. Trainers who have heard the same original presentation and who use the same materials will be able to more accurately and consistently teach the information to others. This is important because some of the information is completely new.
The materials should not be modified because this product is endorsed by CDC's National Program for Cancer Registries, NCI's SEER program, and NAACCR. Trainers are encouraged to tailor their presentations by selecting the portion of the materials that is appropriate for the selected audience. Speaker's notes are provided in textual format as this is the most complete format. These notes may be reduced to bullet format at the preference of the presenter.
