May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, a celebration of the joy and health benefits of living an active life. This year, "May Month" celebrates its 20th Birthday. Since President Reagan proclaimed the first National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in 1983, "May Month" has spurred Americans to get moving in May - individuals, families, employees in the workplace, communities, and public/private sector organizations.

May is the perfect time to get moving. It's spring, the weather is getting warmer, and people want to get out and enjoy nature's rebirth. Whether it's a walk along the beach, hiking in the mountains, swimming in a country lake or bicycling around the city to see its many sights, the physical activity and fitness opportunities are endless.

Everyone benefits from regular physical activity - babies, children, adults, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people with serious health conditions. So we challenge you to make a commitment to become more physically active during May Month. Adults need at least 30-60 minutes a day on five or more days a week to be healthy, and children need at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports offers the following tools - tips and resources to help you and your family, group or community commit to a physical activity/fitness program for May Month:
