GLOBE Scientists' Corner

GLOBE Science Report

Dr. Dixon Butler, GLOBE Chief Scientist

Hello.

Dr. Dixon Butler All of us want to know more about what is going on around us. Science is one of the ways we do this. In making GLOBE measurements, you are helping us all to know more about what is happening in our world.

What makes your GLOBE observations science? You make your observations science by being careful, skillful, and thoughtful as you make the measurements. There are carefully prepared protocols and instrument specifications for each of the measurements. When you follow these procedures, using the right tools in the right way, the resulting measurements are good enough to use in scientific research.

All of us working on GLOBE are a team. The measurements you are making come together with those from students all over the world, like the pieces of a puzzle, to give a picture of entire regions, countries, and continents. Consistency in the way GLOBE measurements are made is what allows these bigger pictures to be valid and meaningful. By being consistent in following the GLOBE procedures you become part of the whole GLOBE team.

As the new GLOBE Chief Scientist, I am looking forward to working with you all. I will keep in touch with you through the GLOBE Scientists Corner!
