Medical Retinal Fellowship

The National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, is offering a post-residency clinical medical retina fellowship. The purpose is to provide a broad and extensive exposure to medical retina as a basis for pursuing a subsequent academic career. This is a two-year fellowship, with opportunity to obtain both clinical and laboratory experience. Clinical training focuses on retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, various types of uveitis, and diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to genetic retinopathies and maculopathies. The various treatment strategies for diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, neovascular AMD, and uveitis are important aspects of the educational program. The use of retinal images (fundus photographs, fluorescein angiograms, high-speed indocyanine green angiograms and optical coherence tomographs) for clinical diagnosis and as outcome variables will be emphasized in the program. Training in genetic pedigree acquisition/analysis, linkage analysis, and genotyping will be offered. The program will also include experience in diagnostic visual electrophysiology and psychophysics.

The NEI clinical program is oriented exclusively around clinical protocols, and consequently the fellow will acquire extensive experience in principles of clinical research, including the design and execution of epidemiologic studies and controlled clinical trials. Depending on the applicant's interest the program can be expanded to include laboratory research.

Faculty teaching the program include: Rachel Bishop, MD, Rafael Caruso, M.D., Chi-Chao Chan, M.D., Emily Chew, M.D., Frederick Ferris, M.D, Ian MacDonald, MD, Robert Nussenblatt, M.D., and Paul Sieving, M.D., Ph.D.

The fellowship will not be offered in 2008. Qualified applicants must hold a valid U.S. medical license and have an M.D. Salary is commensurate with experience. Applicants interested in applying for the 2009 fellowship should submit their CV with bibliography in month/year format, personal statement, and 3 original letters of reference to the following individual:
