Pomorska Skola-Split, Split, Croatia

17 October 1997

Pomorska Skola-Split is among the charter GLOBE schools in Croatia. The school was founded in 1849 to educate future deck officers and engineers in merchant marine.

Students at Pomorska Skola-Split receive practical training on board the training ship Juraj Caric. The ship was built in Split in 1952 and named after Juraj Caric, who was a seaman, professor and man of letters and who attended the Pomorska Skola school in 1870. The ships length is 30.00 m, breadth 5.50 m, draught 2.40 m, DWT 148 t, main engine 135 HP, and her speed is 7 NM/h.

Mr. Zoran Ikica, GLOBE Teacher at Pomorska Skola-Split, helped the Croatian Ministry of Education organize a workshop for Croatian GLOBE teachers from June 18 to June 20, 1996. As part of the workshop, teachers (pictured here) took atmospheric measurements on the Juraj Caric and plotted a pixel for biological and geological measurements on the island of Solta near Split. On June 19, the GLOBE flag was raised on the Juraj Caric and it has been flown proudly ever since.

Mr. Ikica and his students would welcome GLOBEMail from schools around the world, or e-mail addressed to Mr. Ikica at Zoran.Ikica@public.srce.hr
