U.S. Ambassador, Musicians Discuss Importance of Music in America

U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Eric G. John and members of Horseshoe Road, Kyle Dillingham and Brad Benge, participate in an online discussion in English and Thai on the importance and diversity of music in American culture. Horseshoe Road, an eclectic American country music group, will visit Thailand from June 23 to July 2, 2008, on a special goodwill tour commemorating the 175th anniversary of relations between the United States and Thailand.

John and I am very pleased to welcome Kyle Dillingham and Brad Benge of Horseshoe Road for this webchat on “Music in America” We look forward to exchanging ideas with you on the importance and diversity of music in American culture. We have already received several interesting questions and we will do our best to answer as many of them as we can over the next hour. So with that, let’s begin.

Have you ever had a chance to perform with Thai country artists? Which Thai artists are you interested to know and perform with?

Q [mrmozambique]: Hi Horseshoe Road. Welcome to Thailand. I have a question about the changing nature of the music business. The music industry has been revolutionized in the last decade by empowering the consumer and, to a certain extent, the artists themselves. Overall, do you have a positive or negative opinion of the changes that have occurred in the industry? Why?

A [Horseshoe Road]: This is Kyle. The changes in the music industry have opened doors for independent artists like us to have a presence online (website, iTunes, Myspace, etc.) making our music as accessible to the world as a major label artist. The thing that is still difficult is to have the same kind of publicity that a label can offer an artist. It is, in fact, publicity that will drive the public directly to a particular artist online to purchase their music, or even to their concerts.

Q [TimD]: Kyle, what is your earliest memory of hearing a violin or fiddle being played? Brad, when did you know you had to be a musician and not someone working in "tall buildings"?
A [Horseshoe Road]: Hi dad, this is Kyle. My earliest memory of a fiddle is from listening to Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys while spending time on the farm with grandpa. I was probably 5 or 6. Hi dad, Brad here. School was not my thing...and everyone told me that you had to do well in school to do well professionally. This, I'm finding now, is not always true. However, it was enough of a motivation to keep me doing what came naturally to me then and now. Thanks for the question.
Moderator: This is the Ambassador again. I'm certainly not in the music business, but I miss the days when major labels focused on promoting artists and albums. Albums could be the focus of attention and discussion for months at a time. The emphasis now is on singles, with a seemingly much shorter career span for both artists and their music.

Q [Chat Participant]: So what is the most popular music in USA today? Rap?
A [Horseshoe Road]: That is hard to say. I'm sure it's something like rap or pop. However eclectic forms of music, such as ours, are rising in popularity...I think because of the rise of digital distribution and web-based social networking.
Q [Chat Participant]: The global trend is for downward music sales. How do you see future of music?
A [Horseshoe Road]: Kyle: I feel like whether music is being downloaded, burned, bought in a store, or traded, the thing that will never be replaced is the experience of a live performance. Everyone wants to be entertained. I think the future of music is looking positive for this reason – the quality of the live performance will have to continue to rise, becoming more and more compelling and touching. That's exciting!

Q [ddunham]: Kyle, what was the name of the TV show you played on in Thailand?
A [Horseshoe Road]: “At 10” was the name of this TV Show. This was in 2000. Bambi was one of the hosts. She was so beautiful!
We were here on a goodwill tour for the US Embassy in November 2006. It is very exciting to be invited back. Hopefully we will see some familiar faces, as well as have the opportunity to meet lots of new friends. We'll be performing at Mahasarakham Rajabhat University (June 24), Udonthani Rajabhat University (June 25), Khon Kaen University Nong Khai campus (June 26), Islamic College of Thailand (June 28), and Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai (June 30).

Horseshoe Road: This is Kyle. I have a question for our Thai audiences. What are some of the most favorite American songs here in Thailand?
Horseshoe Road: Hello everybody. This is Brad from Horseshoe Road. I just want to say how great it is to be back in Thailand...the land of smiles! The people here are so outgoing, and the audiences are hungry for music. The Embassy has made us feel so welcome and important.
Q [American Abroad]: Welcome to Thailand, Horseshoe Road! I have been living in Bangkok for some time and find in general widespread appreciation for what I guess would be considered American classic rock (e.g. The Eagles, CCR, etc.). Do you find the same in other countries you have visited? Do you feel that your audiences abroad appreciate the genre of American music that you play? What are some of the most requested songs you get while on tour? Have you ever had a negative reaction (or, perhaps just as bad, no reaction) from the audience to a song you played? If so, what song was it? Thanks, an American Abroad (in Thailand).
A [Horseshoe Road]: Some of our most requested songs have been, John Denver's "Take me home, Country Roads," "What a Wonderful World," and we have also found that our audiences have all loved the traditional bluegrass and western swing music whether they were familiar with it or not.
Q [Kenny and Diane]: Kyle and Brad, you have mentioned here in your concerts in Oklahoma that the crowds in Thailand and Japan love John Denver's "Country Road." What are other American songs or tunes popular with international audiences, particularly those in Thailand? You have some new songs in your repertoire, which ones do you anticipate your Thai audiences will enjoy that you have not sung there before? Kenny and Diane Brown, Edmond, OK
A [Horseshoe Road]: Kyle: I think that "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is going to be a "Thai Favorite" for this trip. Our version of this very familiar song is actually featured on our new CD, "Reel To Reel." And we will have this CD available to our Thai audiences at all of our performances over the next 10 days!
Q [Thailander]: My name is Dawut Sassanapitax. I'm a student of Ajarn Chollada [at the Islamic Islamic College of Thailand]. Here are some questions from me: 1. How did you become “Horseshoe Road”? 2. How do you think about Thailand? 3. Have you ever been in Thailand? 4. Which bands/artists you like the most? Sawasdee Krab, Dawut
A [Horseshoe Road]: This is Brad. Let me answer a few of your questions. 1. We were session musicians in Oklahoma, USA. We recorded in the studio together, as well as festivals and jam sessions. We began playing together in a house on "Horseshoe Road" in Oklahoma City in 2005. 2. I love Thailand. The people are "all smiles" and have made us feel so welcome. I love the FOOD as well. 3. Yes. We were here in '06. 4. I am not aware of the bands you've mentioned. However, some of our American influences are Bill Monroe, Django Reinhardt, Bob Wills, Allison Krauss, and The Flaming Lips. A [Horseshoe Road]: Kyle: I just wanted to add a quick comment about the Ambassador's comment on Album vs. Single. That is a very interesting thing to note. As an artist, this is a little sad for me because an album takes on a feel and shape. As a band, Horseshoe Road is still very focused on the concept of an album. However, our music is not on the radio nationwide either...so.
Q [jegneb]: Hi guys! Do you find it interesting that other cultures are so receptive to your music, whereas generally speaking, the reverse isn't true about our country when it comes to foreign music? By the way, we've enjoyed the chat! Jan & Lovell Benge
