PMC REACHES THE MILLION ARTICLE MARK

PubMed Central (PMC) reached the one million-article mark the week of June 18, 2007. Now in its seventh year, PMC is enhanced each week with articles from over 350 important life sciences journals whose publishers have agreed to deposit current issues. Many of the participating publishers have also benefited from the PMC Back Issue Digitization Project, where NLM scans older issues from cover to cover, starting with volume 1, and creates PubMed citations for articles that are not in PubMed. Jointly sponsored by the Wellcome Trust and Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the UK, the NLM scanning project has collected and collated over 5 million pages of material. As of June 2007, these scanned articles accounted for 675,000 of the million articles in PMC.

New Image Viewer in PMC

Hello PMC users, We have introduced a new feature in PMC that lets users enlarge images and move around within the larger view, similar to what you can do on most internet map sites. For an example, look at figure 2 in Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2006 October 10; 103(41): 15097–15102, http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1622782#figures-tables-sec. From the thumbnail at the end of the article, you get to the standard view of the figure that PMC has always provided. Now, when you click on that, you get a magnified view, with zoom and pan controls on the right. Clicking the magnifying glass in the top right corner of the magnified view brings you back to the standard view. This new image feature is initially available only for more recent articles, but is being extended gradually to the entire PMC collection. One further caveat: image enlargement is possible only in journals that provide PMC with high resolution image files for their figures. In cases in which journals did not preserve their high resolution images before they joined PMC, the standard PMC image is all that we can provide. The image magnification software was developed by a inhouse team at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at NLM, which manages PMC and many other online services. UKPMC will function as the United Kingdom's archive of free, full-text biomedical research articles and will contain most of the content currently available in PubMed Central. The UKPMC project includes an installation of the United Kingdom Manuscript Submission System (UKMSS), a version of the Portable PubMed Central Manuscript Submission system (pNIHMS) developed at NCBI. These two systems provide a mechanism archiving and distributing research manuscripts funded by the UKPMC consortium.
