T/B Pequeco #II

Elk River, Chesapeake Bay
Subject Countermeasures/ Mitigation
Posting Date 2000-Jan-30

On the 5th of March Donjon Marine's heavy lift crane was able to raise the Paqueco II so
that her deck was at the surface of the water. At this point the barge was suspended on
four wire slings while all of the liquids in the barge were transferred to another barge.
All of the sodium silicate cargo was considered contaminated and was pumped along with the
water that had flooded the damaged bow rake. When the pump off was completed the Pequeco
II was towed to Baltimore where temporary repairs were conducted before it was towed to
Norfolk for final repairs. The Pequeco II has been reported to be again in service in the
Chesapeake Bay.
