2.0 Site Status Summary

The facility is located near the southwestern edge of the Main Street Campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB), which is located in the northeast corner of the city of Buffalo, New York. License R-77 was amended June 6, 1997, for possession only. There is no fuel on site. A Decommissioning Plan (DP) has not been submitted.

The Nuclear Science and Technology Facility (NSTF)reactor of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB) has been in operation since 1961. From 1961 to 1963 the reactor was fueled with materials-testing-reactor (MTR)-type fuel elements and operated at a maximum steady-state power level of 1MW. In 1963 the reactor was shut down and the core and control systems were modified so that the reactor could operate with PULSTAR-type fuel at power levels of up to 2 MW. In 1964 SUNYAB-NSTF was issued License (R-77) for its pulse training assembled reactor (PULSTAR). In 1984, the license was renewed for a period of 20 years. The NSTF reactor operated with PULSTAR fuel from 1964 until shutdown. The organization currently responsible for maintaining the facilities is the SUNY-Buffalo Medical Research Center (SUNY-BMRC).

3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues

The licensee is a part of the State of New York University System. Decommissioning funding shall be provided through the State and SUNY annual budgeting process. Licensee notes the State has not yet provided it with the necessary funding for licensee to initiate decommissioning process.
