The Department of Mental Health - Office of External Affairs is responsible for public information and outreach for DMH, including coordinating media activities, overseeing DMH publications and general education materials, and answering inquiries from the press and general public. The Assistant Director, External Affairs serves as a member of the executive staff, acts as a departmental liaison to advisory bodies and community mental health organizations and coordinates public affairs activities with the California Health and Human Services Agency.  The Office of External Affairs is also responsible for the coordination of appointments to the California Mental Health Planning Council and State Hospital Advisory Boards.
