Volunteer opportunities

The following is a list of volunteer opportunities from the Community Programs Office (CPO) to consider:

  • The dog rescue-themed kid's movie "Hotel for Dogs" is opening this weekend and Regal Cinemas (on Cerrillos and Zafarano) in Santa Fe has invited the Española Valley Humane Society to have dog adoptions at their theater from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday (January 17). Volunteers are needed to help with the dogs. For more information, contact Nina Chiotasso at 470 -1278 or by e-mail at

  • Volunteer science fair judges are needed at the Los Alamos Public Schools. The time commitment for judging is 6 to 8 p.m. on January 23 for orientation and initial viewing of projects and from 8 a.m. to noon on January 24. If interested, contact Randy Ryti.

LANS employees may be eligible for community service for math and/or science related volunteerism. For more information, contact Tom Cordova of the Community Programs Office at 5-4400. The Lab's Volunteer Program is a Community Programs Office approved activity.

Wellness Center classes

The following classes are available to the Laboratory workforce. Classes are held in Wellness Center Room 106 unless otherwise noted.

  • Injury Prevention classes - Ongoing classes. No registration required. RN/health fitness specialist Phyllis Webb and health/fitness specialist Linda Lambert teach these classes on Monday and Wednesday, January 5 - March 25, Wellness Center Room 121.
    • Lower Body Express - Improve balance and core stamina while increasing lower body muscle tone, endurance, and flexibility. This 30-minute workout focuses on low back, abdominal, hip, and leg muscles to boost total body stability and functional fitness for active living. 11 to 11:30 a.m.
    • Upper Body Express - Helps maintain and improve range of motion and muscle tone in shoulders, back, and arms. 11:30 to noon
  • Support Group: M.E.A.L., Mindful Eating, Active Living - Drop in to this support group to obtain help in achieving and maintaining weight loss goals. No registration required. Every Tuesday from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Facilitators: Phyllis Webb, Marta Gentry Munger, and Linda Lambert

Lab employee seeking information on vehicle accident

A Laboratory employee whose vehicle was struck in the parking lot of Occupational Medicine at Technical Area 3 the afternoon of December 11 is asking for assistance. The person who struck Yvonne Gonzales's car left contact information at Occupational Medicine, but Gonzales was unable to retrieve the contact information for the driver of the second vehicle.

Lab employees who have information or may have witnessed the incident are asked to contact Gonzales at 5-0719.

Hunting season under way at nearby pueblo

The annual elk-hunting season at San Ildefonso Pueblo has begun. The hunt for big game is open to tribal members; the land is adjacent to Laboratory property. The elk hunt lasts through January 31.

Laboratory employees are asked not to stray onto pueblo lands, to obey all posted signs, and be aware that gunshots may be heard during this time.

Wellness Center follows Laboratory operating schedule

The Wellness Center facility is on Laboratory property. If the Laboratory delays opening, has an early release, or closes due to inclement weather or other unforeseen emergency, the Wellness Center follows the Laboratory operating schedule as announced to the rest of the workforce.

Employees and other Wellness Center customers should not come to the Wellness Center when Laboratory management has determined that conditions are such that only essential workers should be at work.

Recreational equipment available for check out from Wellness Center

Want to play bocce ball, volleyball, or horseshoes? The Wellness Center has these and other recreational equipment available to check out. There is no fee to check out the equipment but it can be used only for Laboratory sponsored events, such as office picnics or outings. The equipment can be checked out for a maximum of three days.
