To the
Bahrain group: You have an ideal situtation for doing significant environmental
work. Your kingdom is small enough so that you can understand and investigate
all of the environmental areas in it, and look at how they are changing over
time. It is change that is important to be able to quantify, and you are in an
unique position to do so.

that the soils in Bahrain, Jordan, and Lebanon all have a lot of carbonates in
them. Why do you think this is so?

we can get you another image of your area. Your current image is fairly recent,
so I am suggesting we get you an older image (early 1990's) so that you can look
at what changes have occured since then.

Is rising
salinity a "pollution?" Is it caused by changes in water levels or invasion of
ground water by sea water? A very interesting observation that need
investigation. I lived long ago in an area where sea water invaded ground water
supplies (it was on an island.) Extensive measures had to be taken to fix the
problem.

Fadi: The images you have are relatively
recent (early 2000's) It would be very instructive to take images from the early
1990's, about 10 years old, and look at the changes since then. Ten years is a
good time span to examine in an area like yours that has undergone significant
expansion and environmental problems. It would be nice to have images dating
back even farther.

[ ReneeCodsi/AmericanCommunitySchoolBeirut/LB - 0 - 13:31:37 ]
The
high concentrations of bacteria are due to raw sewage waste being dumped out
intot he sea sn onto our beaches. The way to stop this is to start treating our
sewage and stop dumping it directly onto beaches with high public accessibility.

RE: [EmanYousif/Yathrebintermediategirlsschool/BH] To
Larry:the precipitation pattern changes because of the pollution we have around

Interesting: Now the problem is to look at the specific local and
regional problems that directly affect your precipitation. It is fine to say
that "world pollution" is to blame, but in our investigations we must be as
focused as we can be to find those things that we can directly influence for the
better of the environment. It's hard to tackly the whole world at once.
[ Becky/GLOBE - 0 - 13:35:32 ]
RE: [MayandAhmed/KhawlaGSSchool/BH] Re: Becky: Excessive
evaproation, with very little rivers flowing into the Gulf
Do you
think the salinity is the same everywhere in the Gulf?
[ Maha/Hidd/BH - 0 - 13:35:37 ]
to Becky: hi I am Maha from Hidd
Secondary school, I'd like to point out that we found some oil while we were
surveying the beach. And this really effects the environment directly specially
the living creatures there. The main problem we face in Bahrain is reclaiming sea
which leads to other serious enviromental problems. For example today we
measured the beach salinity and it was 56 which proves the reclamation effect on

We can learn from looking

course, many things can change these. And who would have known even air
temperature measurements are now important, since the average air temperature
near the surface is rising.

salinity a "pollution?" Is it caused by changes in water levels or invasion of

investigation. I lived long ago in an area where sea water invaded ground water

problem.
This is a very interesting question and one that I never
considered as pollution. However, it is caused by human activities and harming

other experts and get back to you.

Here in Maine, students,
teachers, parents and citizens go out and walk the lengths of our beachers and
coastline (we have 5000 km of coastlinie in my state alone) cleaning up the
trash they find. This trash is cataloged so we have an inventory of what kinds
and how much are arriving on our beaches. Sometimes the source of the trash can
be identified. For example, several years ago hundrede of SNEAKERS washed
ashore. It turned out that a ship, in trouble off the coast, had to jetison
cargo. Sneakers.

There is so much to learn, so I understand it is difficult to
find time to work in GLOBE. There are some GLOBE activities that take less time
-- for example, it doesn't take a long time to look at the sky and see whether
there are contrails; or to figure out what kind of clouds you are looking at.
Also, it doesn't take long to measure air temperature or precipitation.
[ Larry/GLOBE - 0 - 13:44:46 ]
RE: [MayandAhmed/KhawlaGSSchool/BH] Re: Larry: Well, we

Tar is interesting. Well, not as tar, but
as a beach pollutant. Do you have hypotheses about where it comes from?

RE: [Khalilhamarneh/AmmanBaccalaureateSchool/JO] Dr.Jessica
how is GAPS helping the globe program?and you said that we could the latest

Basic GAPS is a
computer simulation model for students that lets you study the interplay among
the different GLOBE measurements and how each affects the Earth system. The
model was developed by researchers at Cornell University and we first need to
get the software copyrighted. Once that process is complete then we can send you
a copy of the software. We hope to have that done in the next couple of weeks.
Please send me your address so I can send you the software.

RE: [Maha/Hidd/BH] to Becky: hi I am Maha from Hidd
Secondary school, I'd like to point out that we found some oil while we were
surveying the beach. And this really effects the environment directly specially
the living creatures there. The main problem we face in Bahrain is reclaiming sea
which leads to other serious enviromental problems. For example today we
measured the beach salinity and it was 56 which proves the reclamation effect on
the environment. And as a GLOBE student, i really want to help solving this
problem, so what do you suggest to do other than giving lectures?
Now
you are acting like a SCIENTIST. You have identified some unusual values. How
can you design a project to demonstrate increasing salinity values and how this
is affecting the sea environment. So, go through the scientific method and draw
conclusions that can be presented to others to inform others of what is
happening. Maybe then you can figure out how to solve the problem.

The
high concentrations of Nitrogen in the sewage are actually a more serious throet
to the sea life than the bacteria. The depletion of Oxegen in the water makes
the productivity go down. The bacteria causes a concern for mamals, but we have
very few dolphons in the eastern Med and no seals or sea lions. We have to be
concerned when we walk our dogs on the beach though and they are exposed to the
high bacterial concentrations as well.

Hi, Peggy - no
snow here in Florida - Hi, Jessica - theme of the importance of the surface
(water, soil, land cover) is so important to me as a meteorologist - the
atmosphere exchanges with the surface are very important to scientists. The more
observations we have about all surface measurements, such as hydrology, soil,
and land cover, the better meteorologists can do their jobs at understanding
energy and cycle changes with air. The GLOBE observations around the world are
crucial for this - in some cases GLOBE schools are the only places for tens of
kilometers around where any measurements are taken!

In Florida we

Well, all
the countries on this web chat are in arid regions. The very high temperatures
and low precipitation levels results in high evaporation levels (as one of the
schools mentioned)and the salts get left in the soil. In regions like the
Northeast USA (where I come from) we get a lot more precipitation so the salts
move through the soil instead of remaining in the soil. Do you ever see salts at

This is a perfect opportunity for the students of the Gulf

these data vary, and contribute to understanding of your region. If you do not
gather the data, who will?

The
comments about industry and pollution are very interesting. When our livelihood
depends on an industry, we have to consider that factor. In the GLOBE ONE
experiment in Iowa, farmers grow maize and soybeans. In so doing, they modify
the environment significantly, but they could not grow the crops without
modifying the environment. However, most of the farmers are very interested in
keeping the impact on the environment as small as possible while still growing
the crops.

RE: [SarahandFatima/HamadTown/MuharraqSecondarySchool/BH]
To Jessica, well yes, we think that the salinity in the water can affect our
soils a lot, there's a seepage of water into underground reservoir
But
what about conditions of the soil - do you have limestone parent material?
Limestone is predominately calcium, which is a salt - that could affect the
salinity of your soils, especially if you don't get a lot of precipitation. Have
you ever seen a hard white pan in your soils - that's a result of calcium
carbonates. I've seen these white pans in soils in Arizona (USA), which is also
an arid environment.

Re cloud
base. This is a good question. If you shine a light on the cloud base, you can
tell how high it is. If the light shines vertically, and you are 1 km away from
the light, the following is true: You look up at a 45 degree angle to see the
light on the cloud base -- that means the cloud base is 1 km high. If you look
less than 45 degrees (more horizontally), the cloud base is less than 1 km. --
the angle plus the distance gives you cloud base. (a similar technique is used
to measure treetop height in GLOBE).

it should have most of the land covers you might find. If you have suggestions

you can use spotlights or searchlights to measure cloud height - this is an old

To Jessica: it's usually around 8, so that explains that there is a lot of Caco3

Hi
Sarah and Fatima, A pH of 8 is what we called an alkaline soil. When you get
soil with pHs between 8 and 9 then the soils are considered saline and above 9
they are sodic. Saline and sodic soils have high pHs due to sodium not calcium.
You can grow crops in alkaline soils, but it is very difficult to grow crops in
saline and sodic soils. These soils have very little structure because the
sodium disperses the soil particles. That is why I was curious about pH. The
soils around don't have as high pHs because we get a lot precipitation. And the
salts we do have are calcium and calcium is very soluble in water so we don't
get those pans.

[ Paul/FloridaStateUniversity/US - 0 - 14:28:16 ]
I'm not very
familiar with the weather and climate of the middle east overall, but weather
patterns can be global in nature, or very local (or everything in between).
Scientists learn about these patterns by studying observations from all
locations on the GLOBE. This is where GLOBE can be helpful, by helping to
provide consistent and reliable and comprehensive observations.

In my area,
estuaries and tidal flats are important breeding grounds for aquatic species,
yet very few measurements of the cycling of salinty have been carried out. Here
is where GLOBE students can make real and important contricutions to the body of
scientific knowledge.

If I remember correctly, we measured around 43 ppt at the

the news that they may be building desalination plants along the coast of
California. There are concerns about how it may affect the sea environment.

It would be

local factors influence species?

RE: [khalilhamarnehJORDAN] Dr.Jessica i aam the group

GAPS
Hello Khalilhamarneh, The reason why we developed Basic GAPS for
students was to provide them with a tool for studying the interplay between the
different components (soils, atmopshere, land cover, hydrology, phenology) of
the Earth System. We talk a lot about Earth as a system, but it can be a
difficult concept to teach. With Basic GAPS a student can see how one component
affects the other. For example one type of soil texture will hold more water
than another and this in turn will affect drainage, runoff, and soil water
content.

RE: [NayefCopty/AmmanBaccalauriateSchool/JO] dr rebbeca is

For many
years, I lived in the Adirondack mountains of New York state, in the NE US at an
elevation of about 500 m. We could have snow as late as early MAY! We once had a
blizzard in the first week of may. There are so many variables that influence
weather and climate. We are all familiar with our own reagion, so that the
weather in other places sometimes seems strange. GLOBE is a good way to explore
this.

RE: [MayandAhmed/KhawlaGSSchool/BH] Scientists: Why do YOU
suppos we are having so much "unusual" rain? And "cold" weather?
Hi! I
just went into the other room to look at the global weather map. There is an
upper-level trough to the west of you. This means that the air about 5.5 km
above you is flowing from the southwest to the northeast, and probably rising.
Rising air is associated with rainfall. This is more of a description than an
explanation! The "troughs" are "low pressure areas". Air flows into low-pressure
areas because air flows from high to low pressure. Thus air in the low pressure
areas tends to go upward. Why is there a trough there? The troughs tend to move,
but we know that the positions of larger, slow-moving to stationary troughs are
tied to global surface temperature patterns -- for example, the weather in the
U.S.A. is strongly influenced by the changes associated with El Nino. The
troughs over Europe and the Middle East are also, but to a lesser degree. We are
learning that the temperature distribution in the Atlantic Ocean can affect the
positions of troughs as well, and hence influence rainfall.

RE: [NayefCopty/AmmanBaccalauriateSchool/JO] dr rebbeca is

Larry is
right. The elevation here in Boulder, Colorado, is over 1760 m above sea level.
The weather we have today is actually not too unusual. It occurs when we get
east winds. This air, moving from east to west, is forced to rise with the
terrain. This cools the air, the water in the air condenses, and we get rain.
When it is cool enough (and it can be, at 1760 meters), we can get snow. We
actually have had snow in June. I think July is the only month that we don't get
snow.
