School to School Activities

Gulf Coastal Erosion

At first our magnet school worked with the Vernon Parish 4-H club and the Cattlemen''s Association to participate in the gulf coastal erosion program. The Coliseum let us save Christmas trees on their lot and the raido station put on free announucements, then the Vernon Parish volunteers would pick up our trees. The Army Corp of engineers sent a scientist to tutor our class and then we were allowed to speak at their booth when the NSTA came to New Orleans for 4 days. After four years of working and making official visits with local mayors, our city officials decided to pick up trees in the city and send them to the Gulf''s coast. We send trees to stop the erosion , because Louisiana is loosing enough land each day to be equivalent to a football field. The news made the paper and an editorial was written about students caring enough about their state to make a difference in the environment and in our city''s budget.
