Highlights:

• By combining three years of data from SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 1999 to 2001, SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies was able to produce substate estimates of substance use. These substate areas were the State designated treatment planning areas for that time period.

• In 1999 to 2001, past month use of marijuana varied from 2.3% in Northwest Iowa and 2.6% in Southern Texas to 10.3% in Boulder, Colorado and 12.2% in Boston.

• Of the 15 State treatment planning areas with the highest rates of past month marijuana use in the United States, five were in Massachusetts, three were in California, and two were in Colorado.

This Short Report, The NSDUH Report:  Marijuana Use in Substate Areas, is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
