The NSDUH Report:  Substance Abuse or Dependence in Metropolitan and Non-Metropolitan Areas, 2004 Update

Highlights:

  • Based on SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health, in 2004, persons aged 12 or older who lived in metropolitan areas were more likely to abuse or be dependent on alcohol or an illicit drug during the past year than those living in non-metropolitan areas.
  • Males living in metropolitan areas were more likely to abuse or be dependent on alcohol or an illicit drug than males living in non-metropolitan areas.
  • Rates of past year substance abuse or dependence changed little between 2002, 2003, and 2004 in either metropolitan or non-metropolitan areas.

This Short Report, The NSDUH Report:  Substance Abuse or Dependence in Metropolitan and Non-Metropolitan Areas, 2004 Update, is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
