Improvements to the Reviewer Travel Reimbursement Program--SREA

Goal: To determine if there was a potential cost benefit by issuing non-refundable tickets for reviewer travel instead of a fully refundable ticket.

Expected Benefits: NIH could save well over $10 million a year when this initiative is fully implemented by the SREA Management and Service Center.

Status: CSR and 23 ICs (NIA, NIEHS, NIDDK, NIDA, NIDCD, NINDS, NICHD, NCRR, NIAID, NCCAM, NIAMS, NHLBI, NEI, NIMH, NIGMS, NLM, NIDCR, NHGRI, NINR, NBIB, NIAAA, NCI, and NCMHD) are participating in the pilot study. To date, the travel study has generated a significant savings of over $14.5 million since June 2006, and 28,493 tickets have been issued. We are continuing to allow one change request without seeking prior NIH approval as long as it does not exceed $500.00, and only 2,544 changes have been requested.

Schedule for Implementation: We will continue to gather data and assess the overall impact on the reviewer. CSR will send out a customer satisfaction survey to study sections members to assess the overall impact. At the end of the pilot, the data will be evaluated and presented to the NIH Extramural Advisory Working Group for consideration of establishing an NIH wide policy on the use of non-refundable tickets for reviewer travel.
