 FAQs

The Selection Process

What are the most unusual aspects of the Truman competition?

Candidates often find the Policy Proposal section of the application to be a bit usual.  Additionally, the extent of work required to produce written material of sufficient quality - and the fact that this alone does not guarantee selection - is surprising to many candidates.  Many Finalists are shocked at the challenging and often confrontational interview with the 4 to 6 member selection panel.  Finalists also find it unusual - and most welcome - the warmth and support they receive from the other Finalists.  They enjoy a day together in which although only a few of the candidates will win Truman Scholarships - virtually all will have the pleasure of making new friendships and acquaintances.
