Unaccompanied Alien Children’s Services
The Division of Unaccompanied Alien Children’s Services provides housing and a wide range of services to Unaccompanied
Alien Children (UAC) under age 18 who have been apprehended
by U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration officials.
Once referred by DHS, the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR)
temporarily places the children in ORR-funded shelters, group
homes, staff-secure shelters, secure shelters, foster care or
residential treatment centers, depending on the needs of the
particular child.
While
in ORR custody and care, children are provided not only shelter
and meals, but also medical screenings and services, group and
individual counseling, vocational training, recreation, full-day
classroom education and family reunification services.
Funding
is available for the housing facilities and therapeutic residential
mental health facilities through discretionary grants for services.
Private for-profit and non-profit organizations are eligible
to apply.
