GLOBE Students from Konawaena High School in Kealakekua, Hawaii and St. Francis of Assisi in Louisville, Kentucky are working to enhance environmental awareness and promote the idea of sustainable development by serving as members of the Youth Advisory Board for Rescue Mission Planet Earth. This organization developed a set of environmental indicators for young people to use in monitoring progress on implementing Agenda 21, the environmental action plan developed by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.

On March 10, 1997 these Hawaii and Kentucky GLOBE students gathered in Washington, D.C. to present a report to the President's Council for Sustainable Development. The students discussed their accomplishments and future goals with the Chair of the Council, Mr. Jonathen Lash.

While in Washington, the students visited the GLOBE office to provide an update on their progress in collecting atmospheric and hydrology data and to explain how their GLOBE scientific work contributes to their work in the Rescue Mission Planet Earth project. Congratulations to these outstanding young diplomats and environmental educators!
