TIME:

11:30am - 12:30pm Eastern Time (15:30-16:30 UT)

TOPIC:

Biome Studies

HOSTED BY:

Kingsburg High School, Pikeview High School

GLOBE schools at the far reaches of the western and eastern regions of the United States are linking up in a cross-country study of local biomes. Last December, students from Kingsburg High School in California conducted field experiments and gathered data from sites in Yosemite National Park while GLOBE Students from Pikeview High School collected field data from Pipestem State Park.

On April 7, these students hosted a GLOBE chat to share their findings from their winter studies, and to make spring-time comparisons of their biomes. The Kingsburg High School students joined the chat from Yosemite National Park. NASA has created a special website to track the continuing collaboration of the schools at: http://education.gsfc.nasa.gov/yosemite99/

Good morning and welcome to this Web chat on Biome Studies! We welcome today as our experts the GLOBE students from Kingsburg High School and Pikeview High School. Last December, they conducted field experiments and gathered data from sites in Yosemite National Park and Pipestem State Park (respectively), and today they will share their findings from these studies. I'm Avnish from the GLOBE Help Desk, and I'll be your moderator.

Hello PikeView school!:)

[ Dave/GLOBE - 4 - 08:31:52 ]
Hi all. This is Dave Brown. I was with Peggy Foletta's group in Yosemite in December. I couldn't be out there with them this week, but I am joining the chat from my home in Lafayette, California, near San Francisco.

[ Ruthanne - 5 - 08:31:54 ]
Hello from PikeView High School in beautiful West Virginia!

[ Principal/PikeViewHighSchool/US - 6 - 08:32:15 ]
the weather here is 70 deg's and sunny

[ Dave/GLOBE - 7 - 08:32:26 ]
Josh, dude. How's it going out there?

[ HelpDesk - 8 - 08:32:34 ]
Good morning Pikeview and Kingburg! To start off, can you tell us a bit about the type of field experiments you have conducted?

[ Principal/PikeViewHighSchool/US - 9 - 08:33:21 ]
pipestem state park is the yosemite of the east

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 10 - 08:34:45 ]
Good morning and welcome to the chat about our biome comparison project. We are looking foreward to sending information to you. We are comparing ecological data between two different parts of the United States. The first site is Yosemite, which is in the southern Sierra Nevada, in California. The other site is Pikeview, which is located in West Virginia. In California we are also comparing data from winter and spring months from the grasslands of the San Joaquin Valley, elevation 132 meters, to the upper reaches of Yosemite, elevation 1954 meters.

[ Ruthanne - 11 - 08:36:11 ]
RE: [Dave/GLOBE] Josh, dude. How's it going out there?
Hi Dave. Good to hear from you. We've wanted to talk to you for a long time.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 12 - 08:36:22 ]
RE: [Dave/GLOBE] Josh, dude. How's it going out there?
Hey Dave, things are great. You missed a great hike to Chilnualna Falls yesterday.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 13 - 08:37:19 ]
RE: [Ruthanne] Hello from PikeView High School in beautiful West Virginia!
Hi Ruthanne and students, how has your week of data collecting gone?

[ HelpDesk - 14 - 08:37:54 ]
Did each class work together, or were you in teams?

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 15 - 08:38:17 ]
RE: [HelpDesk] Good morning Pikeview and Kingburg! To start off, can you tell us a bit about the type of field experiments you have conducted?
You can see the progress the project has made on our web site, housed by NASA Goddard: http://education.gsfc.nasa.gov/yosemite99/pages/collaborators.html We collected the following data: Hydrology dissolved oxygen pH conductivity alkalinity nitrites Land Cover MUC dominant vegetation Soil soil temperature Weather humidity temperature cloud cover wind UVB GPS latitude longitude altitude

[ Ruthanne - 16 - 08:38:27 ]
We just finished our spring study at the lake on Tuesday and at Pipestem forest site yesterday. We collected vast data that we are anxious to send to you.

[ Dave/GLOBE - 17 - 08:40:48 ]
So what kind of changes have you guys noticed between this trip and December. What are the temperatures like there now? I was in Yosemite about 3 weeks ago, and it was very warm and the waterfalls were really flowing.

[ Ruthanne - 18 - 08:41:25 ]
RE: [Josh/Kingsburg] Hi Ruthanne and students, how has your week of data collecting gone?
Josh, Tuesday was terrible weather! COLD, windy, rain, and even some snow! But we still got the job done.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 19 - 08:41:27 ]
RE: [HelpDesk] Did each class work together, or were you in teams?
The West Virginia class was together in Pipestem State Park . They were composed of AP Biology students and a few chemistry students. In Yosemite our AP Biology students worked in small groups on various protocols.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 20 - 08:43:44 ]
RE: [Dave/GLOBE] So what kind of changes have you guys noticed between this trip and December. What are the temperatures like there now? I was in Yosemite about 3 weeks ago, and it was very warm and the waterfalls were really flowing.
During the winter the manzanita bushes were not in bloom, as they were in the spring. Air, ground, and water temperatures were warmer in the spring than in the winter. Also we are collecting half of the data today, so that information cannot yet be compared to December's data. Lucy's toes did not freeze this time:) lol.

[ LeeLeeandJackie/KingsburgJointUnionHighSchool/US - 21 - 08:44:08 ]
Greetings from KHS!

RE: [Dave/GLOBE] So what kind of changes have you guys noticed between this trip and December. What are the temperatures like there now? I was in Yosemite about 3 weeks ago, and it was very warm and the waterfalls were really flowing.
Still cold, just a little less rain. Our biggest difference this season so far has been the temporary pond that has appeared on our site. It is natural in the spring time but dries up in the summer . We found many salamander eggs, tadpoles, frog eggs in it. This area has many species of salamanders that rely on these temporary ponds for breeding.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 25 - 08:45:54 ]
Seventy degrees sounds very very warm considering 100 is boiling! Our temperature was about 20 C yesterday.:)

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 29 - 08:47:16 ]

RE: [Josh/Kingsburg] Hello, our weather girls , Jackie and Leigh-Ann, are not with us here because they had to stay back.
Hello Josh!! Jackie and leeann are on here talking too

[ LeeLeeandJackie/KingsburgJointUnionHighSchool/US - 73 - 08:58:31 ]
weather here is nice.

[ DavidandAmber - 74 - 08:58:43 ]
What were your readings on the soil?

[ /KingsburgHigh//LucyandKelly - 75 - 08:58:50 ]
The weather's been good here. Warmer than last time. The pictures aren't there because we don't know where the digital camera is.

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 76 - 08:59:20 ]
Thanks Ruthanne for the UVB apparatus. It has been interesting to see how the UVB changes as we increase in elevation. We discovered that we sun burn easier up here. Don't worry we are using sun screen. UVB stands for ultraviolet in the B range. B range is the most dangerous range, and excessive exposure results in sunburns and tans. There is no such thing as a good tan. The UVB meter comes with graphs that represent different skin types and the sun exposure they can handle without getting burned.

[ Kristy - 77 - 08:59:25 ]
RE: [/KingsburgHigh//Unknown] Why is the pond most exciting?
because there are more macroinvertibrets (i think that that is right) that can be seen also it was warm enough that day to get in it with out waiters. i got in it with my pants rolled up to my knees and bare footed. that was fun. the frog eggs feel like jello.

[ Two_other_students_at_PikeView/Bubba_and_Anthony - 78 - 08:59:48 ]
So, what all was going on up yonder in yosemite? Did you see any types of new life that wasn't there in the winter?

[ DavidandAmber - 79 - 08:59:55 ]

RE: [HelpDesk] Hello! I'm Pat from the GLOBE Help Desk. What are you finding about the pond? What kind of animals are living in it, and are there others that depend on it for food or water?
Found lots of salamanders, frog eggs, evidence of deer drinking from the spot, many bugs, and tons of tadpoles. But the water was very yellow from decomposition of the leaves.

[ /KingsburgHigh//LucyandKelly - 87 - 09:01:43 ]
Melissa had to stay in k-burg because she is in the school play.

I suspect these frog and macroinvertebrate populations vary throughout the year. Are they dependent on temperature?

RE: [Josh/Kingsburg] Yes we did get in the water. I had to lean into a water fall that was 8 C!!! I was freezing. The things you do for science!!!lol.
It was about 9 degrees Celsius when we got into the water... I brought my waders, though, it wasn't too bad... I would have hated to been in the water without them.....

RE: [RubnBroda/JardnBotnicoSanCarlosCentro/AR] It´s raining hard in San Carlos Centro. We got 200 milimeters in two days.
Is that typical for this time of year for you? What kind of temperatures do you have now? Do you live in a city or in the country?

[ Josh/Kingsburg - 127 - 09:10:42 ]
Here is some hydrology information from December. Later today we will be collecting data to compare. Let’s start with temperature. The water temperature was similar or relative to the air temperature. The temperatures at Yosemite Creek and the Merced River were colder than the temperature at Kings River obviously because of higher temperatures. Turbidity, or transparency, of the water was very clear at all sites. The results of the dissolved oxygen tests showed that the Merced River had a larger amount of oxygen than the other two sites. This is possibly due to its cooler temperature and a larger amount of shade covering the river. The Ph at the two sites in Yosemite was 7.4. The Ph at Kings River was 8.6, a little more basic. We believe that this is due to the lack of pine needles in the area. The pine needles make the other rivers more acidic. Conductivity was also measured at all three sites. This measurement was much higher in Kings River. Since conductivity is, in a sense, the measure of dissolved substances or ions in the water, this data was fairly predictable. The rivers in the mountain have much less dissolved in them than the Kings River further down the San Joaquin valley. The alkalinity, or the rivers ability to resist changes in Ph, was also higher in the Kings River. The alkalinity is determined by the amount of calcium carbonate dissolved in the water. As the water travels further is dissolves more calcium carbonate from the rocks in the riverbed. The level of dissolved nitrogen was higher in the Kings River as well. Nitrates in the water come from over fertilization during irrigation seasons, waste from dairy cows, or other similar forms of pollution. Since mountain streams aren’t exposed to these conditions, like the rivers in the San Joaquin valley, they have fewer nitrates.

RE: [Josh/Kingsburg] Here is some hydrology information from December.
Those are some very interesting findings! How do you suppose the pH and nitrogen levels affect the macroinvertebrate populations along different points in the rivers and streams?

RE: [HelpDesk] Those are some very interesting findings! How do you suppose the pH and nitrogen levels affect the macroinvertebrate populations along different points in the rivers and streams?
Josh, here is our hydrology information. I can tell you what the data was at our pond in Pipestem yesterday but I was not who completed the water samples the first time. We were working in a pond that was 52 cm. deep. The water was very yellow and it had tons of tadpoles and frog eggs. Our turbidity was around 20cm. The water temperature was 9.5 celcius. For our dissolved oxygen test we came up with 4 mg/L everytime it was performed. The PH at the pond was 7 which we were very surprised by. The conductivity was 40uS/cm.

RE: [HelpDesk] Those are some very interesting findings! How do you suppose the pH and nitrogen levels affect the macroinvertebrate populations along different points in the rivers and streams?
Each organism has a specific pH range in which it can survive and if the pH is out of that range they will die out. We also have noticed that the pine needles lower the pH and the oak leaves raised the pH levels. Our alkalinity is low. This indicates the the pH can change easily with little buffering.

also, the soil layer colors were 10yr5/2 at 2.5cm deep, 2.5y7/6 at 40cm, and 2.5y8/8 going to the full meter. within the final layer (app. 68 cm deep), we had a clay seem, colored N8/. the hole filled with water coming from about 55cm deep, and filled the bottom of the hole with about 3cm of water in less than two hours. the leaf litter was 7 cm dep, and the humus was 1 cm deep. the temperature of the soil 10 degrees C. the reason for the low nitrogen is that the leaves are still holding the nitrogen, and it has not been released by decomposers back into the soil. oh, also, all layers, including the humus, had slight bubling for free carb's. the final layer had app. medium bubbling.

I'm curious: As you travel up from the the San Joaquin Valley (about 100m) to Yosemite in the Sierra Nevada mountains (2000m), how do the average temperature, rainfall, and resulting vegetation vary?

RE: [HelpDesk] Our time is running out so I'd like to thank everyone for participating. We look forward to receiving more data & information on the results of your exciting investigations. I believe Kingsburg will be posting updates on their website at http://education.gsfc.nasa.gov/yosemite99/. Pikeview, do you have a website as well, or who can people contact if they have additional questions?
