Work / Life Balance

  • Telecommuting
Telecommuting (or “flexiplace” or “Flexible Work Place Arrangements Program”) is a program that permits employees to work at home or at an alternative site approved by the Employer for approved periods of time. The parties anticipate that this program will result in increased productivity, improvements in employee morale and job satisfaction, reduced absenteeism, and an enhanced ability to recruit and retain outstanding employees. However, the parties agree that participation in telecommuting is not an entitlement and is not intended primarily to accommodate the personal needs of employees, including dependent/family care.

  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP is a confidential counseling and referral service that can help you and your family successfully deal with life’s challenges.
  • Fitness Center
The fitness center has been designed to encourage all SAMHSA staff to pursue a fitness program and a healthy lifestyle. The facility includes a large room that houses cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, plus a separate room for aerobics and other classes. It is located on the ground level at 1 Choke Cherry Road . The facility is open to members 24 hours per day/7 days per week. There is a minimal membership fee for the facility per month for SAMHSA employees.
  • Flexible Work Schedules
SAMHSA is committed to employee participation in an Alternative Work Schedule Program as one mechanism to improve the quality of work life for its employees.
  • Onsite Health Unit
The list of on-site services that are provided by the Federal Occupational Health (FOH) for your use includes the following—
    • Walk-in care/first aid
    • Provision of interventions prescribed by a personal physician (blood pressure monitoring), immunizations (flu, tetanus)
    • Traveler’s health and immunization information
    • Health awareness programs
    • Health screening programs (hypertension, etc.)
    • Individualized health counseling
    • Medical screenings paid by employees (mammograms, etc)
  • Transhare – Metro
The SAMHSA Transhare program is a transportation incentive program for employees. SAMHSA’s monthly subsidy is up to $100. To participate in this program, interested employees must complete and submit an application. SAMHSA employees whose use of public transportation constitutes a minimum of 80% of their commuting costs are eligible to participate in the program. The subsidy is a “Metrochek” (SmartCard if using Metro) which is accepted at all local transit companies, including MARC trains, VRE, Montgomery County Ride-On, WMATA bus and subway service, and all State registered vanpools.
