A GLOBE Learning Community is a group of people from diverse organizations, with broad expertise and resources, who share a commitment to support and encourage teachers and students addressing complex environmental questions for the benefit of their communities.

The GLOBE Learning Community (GLC) concept was initiated by GLOBE Partners around the world within the first few years of the Program.

GLCs are created to expand the reach of GLOBE activities beyond the scope of individual classrooms. A GLC might begin as a GLOBE Partner based at a university working with teachers and students from primary and secondary schools in the local school district, and then branch out to include prior GLOBE students who have graduated and moved on to the work force or higher education (GLOBE Alumni), parents, youth clubs, scientists, senior citizens, other colleges and universities, daycare centers, museums, businesses, government agencies and more.

Since 1998, GLCs around the world have provided models that successfully promote the teaching and learning of science, enhance environmental literacy and stewardship, and promote scientific discovery.

GLCs recognize that a genuine understanding of our local environments is becoming ever more important to the future health and prosperity of our planet. In a world where new scientific challenges are constantly arising, GLCs nurture a new generation of young people who will apply their natural curiosity and enthusiasm, and knowledge of Earth system science and research skills gained through participation in the GLOBE Program, to address the challenges of the future.
