20 May 1998

On Earth Day 1998, five GLOBE students from Poughkeepsie High School in New York and three students from St. Francis of Assisi School in Louisville, Kentucky, represented the United States at the sixth annual meeting of the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York City. The GLOBE students attended meetings and negotiating sessions of the Commission and interviewed delegates on environmental concerns.

The students also participated in the Earth Day GLOBE Web Chats in a special Learning Center, equipped with computers donated by Hewlett Packard. Computers in the Learning Center featured environmental and educational sites on the Internet. Working with GLOBE scientists Dr. Elissa Levine and Christos Michalopoulos, the students demonstrated GLOBE soil and hydrology protocols. The students' participation in the event was covered in their local newspapers and by CNN.
