Jim Samson GLOBE Teacher Jim Samson likes to boast that his students "contribute to a global society and promote responsibility." Emphasizing learning and self-improvement, GLOBE students at Devils Lake High School in North Dakota create and test their own hypotheses and publish their methods, findings, and conclusions, just like professional scientists.

Through GLOBE, Mr. Samson's students have learned how scientific data are collected and used in research. Students at Devils Lake High School have made measurements in every GLOBE protocol area: atmosphere, hydrology, land cover, and soils!

Mr. Samson shows no sign of slowing down. He is working with his colleagues at Devils Lake to find ways to effectively use videodisks, word processors, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and the Internet in the classroom. Mr. Samson's dedication to his students recently won him a much-deserved honor, the 1998 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
