GLOBE Stars

"Good morning everyone, this is Russell Smithson reporting live from the Crescent Elk Cougar Weather Station at the corner of Ninth and G Street. What do you think the following observations from our GLOBE meteorology center will tell us about the weather today?"

Weekday mornings at 8:30 a.m. on radio station KPOD, GLOBE students of Mr. John Caldwell inform their community of the current weather situation and the special activities they have planned for the day. The outstanding work of these young people got the attention of the California Department of Fish and Game. The students have been asked to help with an important study of the Smith River, Elk Creek, and Jordan Creek. Students travel to various test sites and gather water quality data such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity and turbidity.

"Students are learning the importance of watershed management and they enjoy the practical and valuable experience they are receiving," reports Mr. Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell is helping to bring more schools into GLOBE by helping to lead GLOBE Teacher Training Workshops in Utah and Florida.

Congratulations to the students and teachers of Crescent Elk for sharing the GLOBE Program with their community and with other schools around the country.
