Goal:  To highlight and honor the external scientists who make untold sacrifices serving on CSR peer review groups so the National Institutes of Health can find the best applications and ultimately treat/cure and prevent disease.

 

This award program was developed in 2007 to honor Dr. Marcy Speer who showed unwavering passion and commitment to science and NIH peer review as she battled cancer. 

 

Eligibility:  Any current or former member of a CSR scientific review group.

 

Criterion:  CSR is seeking to honor individuals who have excelled in their service as a peer reviewer by one or more of the following ways: 

  • Going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that NIH grant applications receive fair and expert reviews
  • Having a significant impact on the quality of the peer review process through an abiding commitment to peer review
  • Educating and inspiring colleagues in the scientific community to do their part in serving on CSR review groups.
  • Greatly enhancing peer review by setting an example of excellence, inspiring fellow reviewers, or nurturing new reviewers 

Who Can Nominate: Anyone from the scientific or review communities as well as CSR and NIH staff can nominate someone to receive a Marcy Speer Award.

 

The Deadline: April 16, 2009

 

How to Nominate Someone:  Complete the one-page award form and e-mail it to SpeerAward@csr.nih.gov by the deadline above.

 

The Award Process 

  • The Marcy Speer Award Committee will review all nominations and submit their recommendations to the CSR Director.  Members of this committee include three  CSR Study Section Chairs, three CSR Integrated Review Group Chiefs, and three Scientific Review Officers.   
  • The CSR Director will select the annual award winners based on these recommendations.
  • CSR will announce the award winner via a press release in November 2008 and present the award at the November 3, 2008, meeting of the NIH Peer Review Advisory Committee meeting.
