The upper portion of the Memorial is predominately oak woodlands with some areas of Mexican pinyon and alligator juniper. Along ephemeral drainages are Arizona sycamore and walnut trees, canyon grape vines, and other species typical of riparian areas.

The mountain ranges in southeast Arizona where Coronado National Memorial is located are called Sky Islands. They suddenly rise out of the flat desert landscape into the sky, like islands rising above a calm sea.
