What HHS agencies work on safety issues?

Answer:

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH was established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 which also established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Although NIOSH and OSHA were created by the same Act of Congress, they are two distinct agencies with separate responsibilities. NIOSH is in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is a research agency. OSHA is in the U.S. Department of Labor and is responsible for creating and enforcing workplace safety and health regulations. NIOSH and OSHA often work together toward the common goal of protecting worker safety and health

National Center for Injury Prevention and Control

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began studying home and recreational injuries in the early 1970s and violence prevention in 1983. From these early activities grew a national program to reduce injury, disability, death, and costs associated with injuries outside the workplace. In June 1992, CDC established the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). As the lead federal agency for injury prevention, NCIPC works closely with other federal agencies; national, state, and local organizations; state and local health departments; and research institutions.

Injury Prevention Program Tribal Steering Committee

The National Tribal Steering Committee (TSC) for Injury Prevention was established in 1999 by the Indian Health Service. The makeup of the committee consists of 12 members and 12 alternate members representing each of the 12 Indian Health Service Areas. As a National Committee the TSC represents a total of approximately 4.3 million Tribal people from 569 federally recognized Native American and Alaska Native Tribes across the United States.

National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education

The National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care promotes health and safety in out-of-home child care settings throughout the nation. Located at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, it is funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau.
