What is a renewal application?

Participants in the NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP) are initially awarded contracts for 2 years and want to extend their contracts may apply for a competitive renewal. Renewals may be for a period of 1 or 2 years.

Who can apply for an extension of the NIH LRP?

Any participant whose contract is ending during the next fiscal year is eligible to apply for a renewal. You should apply for a Renewal LRP contract if:
  • You received a prior LRP award within the last 5 years and you are applying under the same LRP program. For example: you received an award under the Extramural Clinical Research LRP and are again applying under the Extramural Clinical Research LRP
  • Your LRP contract was terminated after the first year, however, significant progress was made in your research (please contact the Help Line for more information)

When should I apply for an extension?

You should apply during the application cycle applicable for the fiscal year when your current contract ends. Generally the application cycle will open on September 1 of the year prior to the end date for your existing contract. For example, your contract ends in June 2006. You should apply during the application cycle for FY06 that will open September 2005. Top
How do I submit an application for a renewal contract?

Renewal applications are submitted on line at www.lrp.nih.gov and are subject to the same deadline as new applications. Please check the News and Announcements for information on the application deadlines (Click here to check). Top
How is the length of the extension determined?

While applicants may apply for a 1 or 2 year renewal there are several scenarios that impact the length of the extension that is funded. If an applicant only applies for a one-year renewal and is funded, then the extension will only be for one year.

If an applicant applies for a two-year renewal, the extension period may be one or 2 years. Each applicant lists an Organizational Contact (OC) on their application. That official is asked to provide institutional certification and is provided the option of certifying to one or two years. If they provide certification for one year, then NIH can only consider funding the extension for a one-year period. If they provide certification for two years, then NIH may choose to fund the applicant either for one or two years. NIH's decision on how long to fund is based on the budget and funding priorities.

Applying for a two year renewal does not guarantee that funding will be for two years. Top
Is there a limit to the number of extensions allowed?

No, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria and have eligible debt, you can apply for an extension. Top
How are renewal applications evaluated?

Renewal contracts are evaluated based upon the same criteria as the initial contract with the addition of evaluating research accomplishments during the previous contract. Progress toward development as an independent investigator is a major factor in renewal of Extramural LRP support. Renewal applications are competitively reviewed and the submission of a renewal application does not assure the award of benefits. Top
