James
Langston Hughes, a black poet, was born on February
1, 1902, in Joplin, Missouri. He graduated from
Lincoln University at Lincoln, Pennsylvania in 1929.
A flyer was sent out advertising a luncheon at the
Vista Del Arroyo Hotel on November 15, 1940, featuring
Langston Hughes, the author of the poem "Goodby
Christ." In 1943, Hughes had a publication
entitled "A New Song" published by the
International Workers Order, Incorporated, 50 Fifth
Avenue, New York City, New York. Hughes was in Chicago
from March 28, 1949, through June 10, 1949, working
as a visiting lecture on poetry at the Laboratory
School, which is the University High School of the
University of Chicago. In 1951, Hughes lived in
New York City and was a poet, lecturer and an author.
In January 1951, he completed a book entitled "Simple
Speaks His Mind."
