Yongzhi (Karen) Cui

Dr. Yongzhi (Karen) Cui joined our laboratory in October of 1999 as a postdoctoral fellow. She has received an MD from China Medical University in 1995 and her Ph.D. from the same institution in 2002. Karen explores how the Jak2/Stat5 signaling pathway modulates physiology of distinct cell types, with a focus on mammary epithelium and erythropoiesis. Most notebly Karen, along with Keiko Miyoshi and Greg Riedlinger, isolated and characterized the Stat3 and Stat5 genetic locus in the mouse and further discovered two novel genes within this locus. These three scientists subsequently targeted the entire Stat5 locus with loxP sites, which now permits the inactivation of the two Stat5 genes in selected cell types and ex vivo (Cui et al., 2004). In 2004 Karen was promoted to "Research fellow" and she will lead the effort in LGP to explore in depth the systems physiology of Stat5 signaling.
