If you have diabetes, four key steps can help you control your diabetes and live a long, active life.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

First, learn about diabetes. It’s a serious disease, but you can learn to manage it.

Second, know your ABC’s. A is for A1C, a test that shows what your average blood glucose level has been over the last three months. B is for blood pressure, and C is for cholesterol.

Third, manage your diabetes to avoid long-term problems, such as heart or kidney problems. You should eat healthy foods and stay at a healthy weight.

Finally, see your health care team at least twice a year.
