There are a lot of weight loss programs out there, but how do you find one that is safe and effective?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

If your health care provider tells you that you should lose weight, be sure to choose a plan that includes healthy eating habits. It should reduce calories, but not forbid specific foods or food groups.

Your weight loss plan should also include tips to increase moderate-intensity physical activity. And if your weight loss program specifies a formula diet, such as a very low calorie diet, be sure that your doctor monitors you regularly.

And don’t forget, you also need a plan to keep your weight off after you’ve lost it.
