Alaska Native Undergraduate Summer Internship Program (ANUSIP) : NIDDK

Alaska Native Undergraduate Summer Internship Program (ANUSIP)

In order to further increase the pool of Alaska Native college students entering into biomedical research, University of Alaska and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/ National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) have partnered to create the NIDDK/Alaska Native Undergraduate Summer Internship Program (ANUSIP). This very prestigious summer program selects four Alaska Native students annually who will spend the following summer conducting research in a laboratory at the University of Alaska, Anchorage or University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Subsequent summer students will be eligible to participate in the NIDDK/Office of Minority Health Research Coordination Intramural Summer Internship Program in Bethesda, Maryland or Phoenix, Arizona.

The ANUSIP is a ten week program that beings in June through mid-August. Some flexibility in scheduling exists to accommodate individual student needs. Start dates are determined by the selecting officials or the scientific mentors.

At the start of this program, ANUSIP participants travel to the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland for an initial training weekend. They then return to Alaska where they are each paired with a seasoned University of Alaska researcher and take part in a ten-week mentored research project on any UA campus. At the end of the program, students return to Bethesda to attend the Undergraduate Scientific Session and Research Presentations.

Provisions:

  • Student Participation Allowance ($3,000)
