As a physician, I’m truly alarmed about the thousands of young people under 20 who are developing type 2 diabetes. As obesity rates in children are soaring, more of our kids are at risk for developing the kind of diabetes we used to see only in adults.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

If your child is overweight, you can take these steps to help him or her lower their risk for type 2 diabetes:

  • Increase physical activity to at least 60 minutes each day.
  • Cut some calories from snacks and lunches.
  • Serve smaller portions for meals.
  • Limit TV and computer time to less than 2 hours a day.
