Dr. Horn Speaks at Vatican

HHS Assistant Secretary for Children and Families, Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., addresses Latin American Bishops at the Vatican on issues relating to the family on Dec. 2. In all, 26 bishops were gathered by the Pontifical Council for the Family at the International House Paulo VI to hear Dr. Horn highlight U.S. initiatives to strengthen the family.

“[W]e believe that public policy should -- at a minimum -- do no harm to the family," said Dr. Horn. “Indeed, we believe that public policy should create the conditions that allow the family to thrive and function independent of the state.”

President George W. Bush has called upon Americans to “honor the family,” and maintains the proper role of government is to “protect institutions of our society” which includes the family.

ACF initiatives to strengthen family include the Healthy Marriage Initiative (HMI) which includes a Hispanic Healthy Marriage component.

For more information on HMI, go to www.acf.hhs.gov/healthymarriage/.
