Governor Phil Bredesen Tennessee
A native of Shortsville, New York, Governor Bredesen received a bachelor's degree in physics from Harvard University in 1967. After an early career as a computer programmer, he went on to found HealthAmerica, a company that acquired and operated health maintenance organizations across the country. Bredesen was elected mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991 and re-elected in 1995, serving until 1999. He was one of the founding members of Nashville's Table, a nonprofit organization that distributes surplus restaurant food to agencies serving homeless and low-income citizens. He has also served on the board of directors for the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and he created the Land Trust for Tennessee, a nonprofit that works to preserve open land and traditional farms. Bredesen was elected Tennessee's governor in November 2002 and re-elected in 2006.
