Are we clicked in yet?

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Kids might ask – well, kids usually do ask -- ``Are we there yet?”

Parents, though, might have a more basic question – before they even start the car – ``Are the kids clicked in yet?” Making sure a youngster that should be in a safety seat is in one, and properly secured, can protect a child in a motor vehicle crash.

At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Arlene Greenspan:

``Car seats reduce deaths among infants 1 year of age and less by over 70 percent, and reduce toddler deaths by as much as 54 percent.’’  (11 seconds)

The CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report points that out in a notice to readers.

But the safety seats have to be the correct type for the child’s age, weight and height, correctly installed, and correctly secured on the child.
