Add a personal touch

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Losing weight is maybe half the battle. Then you have to keep it off.

However, a study found personal sessions with a weight loss counselor can help keep the weight off.

Researcher Laura Svetkey of Duke University Medical Center tracked the progress of over 1,000 people who had lost weight. She monitored their struggle to keep it off.

“We talked about making changes in your lifestyle that you could sustain for your life.” (6 seconds)

These include moderate exercise, a balanced diet, and keeping track of your progress.

People who used a Web program for information, planning and tracking their progress kept weight off. However, those with personal counseling kept off on average three more pounds.

The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
