About the Fellowship Office

Mission

To recruit new fellows and to improve the education, research environment, and overall training experience within the intramural program to the mutual benefit of our fellows, scientific investigators, and administrative staff.

Statement of Purpose

The NIDDK Fellowship Office is dedicated to meeting the needs and providing outstanding service and support to the students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows and other trainees in the intramural research program. At present, these individuals collectively number about 450, making NIDDK the fourth largest institute at the NIH. We are deeply involved in all facets of the training experience and aspire to become an important resource for all of our stakeholders as well as a central source of accurate and up-to-date information. Our broad portfolio of activities includes, but is not limited to the following functions:

  • Recruitment of fellows
  • Orientation programs
  • Advocacy regarding benefits and privileges
  • Tracking and monitoring research progress
  • Annual informational surveys and exit interviews
  • Oversight of mentoring
  • Implementation of programs designed to enhance professional and career development
(for example, grant writing, job counseling, and networking)
  • Development of laboratory management skills
  • Conflict resolution

By assisting in recruitment, serving as an advocate for all Fellows, providing administrative support, creating educational and learning opportunities, and acting as a liaison between Fellows and their Mentors, the Fellowship Office fulfills a vital role and hopes to achieve its important goal of broadening and enhancing the research experience at NIDDK. Inherent in this aim is the professional growth and development of our Postdoctoral and Postbaccalaureate Fellows as they prepare for the transition to the next stage of their careers.

Motto

"The difficult we do today…..the impossible takes a little longer."
