Research Applications in Leadership Development

Center for Creative Leadership
The center offers research in five main areas: individual leadership development; leading in the context of difference; team development; sustainable leadership capacity; and leadership for complex challenges. Its Web site provides an annotated list of current research projects and publications, as well as publication ordering information.

Community Toolbox
This site contains a broad list of tasks necessary to create and sustain community health and development programs. Included are sections on leadership, evaluation, advocacy, strategic planning, community assessment, and grant writing. Each section includes descriptions of the task, its advantages, step-by-step guidelines, examples, checklists of points to review, and training materials.

Ideas for Building Creative Communities
One hundred leaders from around the country recently gathered in Memphis, Tennessee, and created the "Memphis Manifesto"—ten key principles for people seeking to build successful idea-driven communities. This call to action is based around the ideas raised in Richard Florida's best-selling book, The Rise of the Creative Class. The Manifesto's principles include cultivating creativity, embracing diversity, and investing in the creative and entrepreneurial community. This document can be useful to Appalachian communities seeking to build communities based around creative ideas.

Kettering Foundation
The foundation conducts research on six interrelated themes, including the theme of community politics and community leadership. The site includes an annotated list of publications on this topic and ordering information.

North Carolina Civic Education Consortium's Civic Index
The North Carolina Civic Education Consortium, whose mission is to bring civics to life for young North Carolinians, has released the 2003 Civic Index, the first state-level benchmark of adult and youth civic engagement in the nation. Contradicting many negative perceptions about youth and civic apathy, the index shows that today's youth are more involved in community service and confident in their civic engagement skills than youth of the past.
Visit the civics web site for results of the index.

Pew Partnership for Civic Change
The Pew Partnership has published What's Already Out There, a condensed collection of community-based programs that are effectively addressing urgent national issues. The programs included in this publication are the result of a research project called Wanted: Solutions for America that documented existing solutions to some of the nation's toughest problems. The book highlights major issues such as Viable Local Economies, Access and Opportunities, and Collaborative Change. Each section offers the core of successful programs in that issue area.

ARC Evaluating Its Civic Capacity-Building and Community Leadership Projects
ARC has initiated a program evaluation of its civic capacity-building and community leadership projects. This evaluation will examine 100 projects funded since 1995, including investments for conveners that provide technical assistance; community initiative projects; leadership training; strategic planning; and a variety of community tools. Westat Corporation in Rockville, Maryland, will conduct the evaluation. Westat's methodology includes 25 follow-up surveys to examine performance measures, 12 case study projects, and a final workshop with stakeholders to discuss the results and how to implement the findings. The report is targeted for completion in fall 2003 and will be available on this Web site.
