New CERTs Program Briefs Available Online
By Martha C. Rundles

Three new Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs) program briefs are now available on the CERTs Web site: Medicare, Child Health and Women's Health. Each brief highlights CERTs research on a particular topic. The following is an overview of each one.

Medicare - Several CERTs research projects have been conducted within the elderly population related to Medicare. A few studies described include: prescription drugs, medical devices, long-term care, home health and mental health.

Child Health - The CERTs have conducted a number of studies related to children, and one CERTs center - at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - is devoted solely to studying therapies for children. A few topics highlighted in the brief include: therapeutic drug monitoring for children with HIV; antibiotic use in children; prescription drug use in pregnant women; and the prevalence and prevention of rickets.

Women's Health - A number of CERTs studies have examined how women respond to different medications and treatment regimens. For example, some CERTs studies described in the brief include: osteoporosis and arthritis; antibiotic resistance and urinary tract infections; and the use of hormone therapy.
