Overview

CMS' Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) Office develops and enhances relationships with national and local organizations, public and private groups, and State organizations to improve our nation's health care by promoting CMS' policies and activities.  IGA develops productive working relationships and partnerships with State and local elected officials and their associations.

IGA helps governors, state legislators, mayors, and other elected officials in a variety of ways, which include:

  • Serving as a link to resources that can accurately address questions and concerns
  • Creating and disseminating informational materials on Medicare and Medicaid and their effect on States.
  • Facilitating communication between the CMS Administrator and Deputy Administrator in communications with intergovernmental officials of other federal agencies, officials of state and local governments and non-governmental organizations, including national advocacy groups and national associations that represent state and local governments.
  • Managing state and local-related conference participation with governmental partners and provides information on Medicare and Medicaid initiatives.

The following pages contain information of interest to State and local government officials and policymakers.  Links to related information within CMS and to several of our partner groups are listed below.
