U.S. Agricultural Trade: Recommended Readings

Contents

Note: For additional information on subjects covered in these readings, please contact the authors directly.

Outlook for U.S. Agricultural Trade summarizes USDA's most recent 1-year projections for U.S. agricultural trade value and volume, as well as projections of selected countries' total trade with the United States.

Food Safety and Imports: An Analysis of FDA Import Refusal Reports (September 2008) examines U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) data on refusals of food offered for importation into the United States from 1998 to 2004. Although the data do not necessarily reflect the distribution of risk in foods, the study found that import refusals highlight food safety problems that appear to recur in trade and where the FDA has focused its import alerts, examinations, and other monitoring efforts.

World Trade Organization and Globalization Help Facilitate Growth in Agricultural Trade (June 2008) reports that, despite strong criticism of the WTO, membership in the organization continues to grow. WTO member countries trade concessions to gain access to foreign markets, benefiting producers and consumers in the aggregate. The growth of the WTO has helped facilitate the globalization of agriculture.
