The United States Senate has confirmed Stephanie Monroe as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education. Monroe joins the Department after nearly 25 years on Capitol Hill. In her new role, Monroe will focus on ensuring equal access to education and promoting educational excellence throughout the nation through the vigorous enforcement of civil rights laws.

"Stephanie is an excellent addition to the Department and will be a terrific leader of the Office for Civil Rights," said U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. "Stephanie has a lot of experience to draw on and I look forward to working with her to ensure our nation's children have an equal access to education."

Most recently, Monroe was a Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee. Previously, Monroe served as Chief Counsel for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions from 2001-2005. From 1989-2001, she was Chief Counsel and Staff Director for the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources Subcommittee on Children and Families. In 1993, Monroe was appointed by Secretary Donna Shalala to be a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Advisory Committee on Head Start Quality and Expansion. Earlier in her career, Monroe served as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Gordon Humphrey. She earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and her J.D. from the University of Baltimore.
