ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - December 11, 2008 – RADM Nevin P. Carr, Jr. assumed the duties and responsibilities as the 22nd Chief of Naval Research (CNR) effective today.

"RADM Carr is the right officer for this challenging and important job,” noted the Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Gary Roughead. “I look forward to future successes as he builds upon the legacy left by RADM Bill Landay and the Chiefs of Naval Research that were before him."

Carr will lead ONR’s staff of highly talented military members, program managers and cadre of scientists and researchers as they develop the science and technology that will power the Navy and Marine Corps’ next generation of warfighting capabilities in concert with the Naval Science and Technology Strategic Plan.

“I am honored to have command of ONR and lead this great organization. I’m looking forward to expanding upon the many successes of RADM Bill Landay and previous CNRs,” said RADM Carr, noting that Brigadier General Thomas Murray, ONR’s Vice CNR, and the Executive Director, Dr. Walter Jones, “have done a phenomenal job leading ONR over the last five months.”

“In my first 100 days, I plan to focus on gaining a deep understanding of the many research programs currently underway at ONR and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). These programs give our warfighters and allies the technological advantages they need against ever-changing threats. Also, I’ll be visiting our customers in the Fleet, Marine Corps, and acquisition community to ensure we are meeting their emerging requirements. This insight will help me formulate priorities in support of the Naval S&T Strategic Plan and ensure that our investments in S&T and our partnerships always give them the edge they need.”

A 29-year Navy veteran, RADM Carr previously led the Navy International Programs Office (IPO).
