Objective:
Objectives of the proposed experiments are: 1. Identification of novel imprinted genes in swine. 2. Identification of genes involved in placenta function in swine. 3. A thorough validation of the newly developed porcine microarrays. 4. Identification of SNPs associated with reproductive traits in swine that can be used in marker assisted selection schemes.

Approach:
We propose to use modern functional genomic approaches to identify novel imprinted genes. More importantly we intend to utilize that information in combination with existing reference and resource families to identify genes that have significant effects on uterine capacity. By combining candidate genes identified by micro arrays, with analysis of segregation of informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in resource families, we will identify molecular markers that can be utilized in modern breeding schemes.
