INTERNATIONAL MALARIA RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM AWARD Release Date: March 6, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-TW-02-001 Fogarty International Center (FIC) (http://www.nih.gov/fic) A limited competition is announced by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) for the RFA "International Malaria Research Training Program Award." The purpose of this award is to train or expand the capabilities of scientists and health professionals from developing countries, in which malaria is endemic, to engage in research relevant to the pathogenesis of severe malarial anemia. The FIC currently supports innovative, collaborative malaria research training programs that contribute to the long-term goal of harnessing scientific knowledge and skills to enhance efforts to prevent malaria-related morbidity and mortality and to control malaria transmission to endemic developing countries (http://www.nih.gov/fic/programs/malaria.html). The NIAID-funded RFA for research grants entitled "Malaria Vaccine Development: Understanding Malarial Anemia" (AI-01-007) and the companion FIC RFA for associated malaria anemia research training programs (TW-01-006) were competed in FY 2001. To receive a FIC malaria research training program award, a Principal Investigator had to have received a NIAID malaria anemia research award. Of four NIAID malaria research awardees, one qualified for a FIC research training program award. Therefore, a new limited competition is open to those three NIAID awardees that did not originally apply for a FIC malaria research training program award. Letters will be sent to those awardees inviting them to apply for the FIC malaria research training award.
